Default Radiance Delayed Arrival by 6 hours

Just got off Radiance 5 night new years cruise, the cruise itself was great (as usual); however, due to dense fog the port of Tampa shut down at 2AM and delayed our arrival into port until 1PM. We cleared the ship at 2PM, but we were the first off, they estimate the rest of the ship to be off by 3:30 - 4:30.

For new years they dropped 2011 ballons and confetti in the centrum while the captain counted down. Free champaign toast - a great event. Also, they hosted a black tie affair in the colony club and pool deck party with buffet.

Man - it must be tough for a lot of people when a ship is that late - regarding flight times I mean.

We have been experiencing some very strabge weather lately, one of the coldest winters in Florida ever.

so what happened with flights? If you had an earlier flight, what did the airlines do? Did you have to re-book at your own expense?

eeeeks.

@Paul - coldest winter in Florida? Can't be colder than last year? I swear last year, it was colder in Florida than it was whenn we'd left Buffalo.

I could be wrong, but I thought I read that somewhere. I like it when the midwest is cold (good for the cruise business) but I think Florida should be hot when people arrive for a cruise.

Even my own Phoenix has had record cold the last week - and I am tired of it. I'm the type who could live in shorts year round.

Around 9AM they opened up the Internet and Phone lines on the ship for free for folks to call and make their own arrangements (i.e., flight re-bookings, etc.). I believe if you had booked your air with the cruise line, they took care of the re-booking for you. For us, we did our air independent of the cruise line, so I called the airline myself to explain the circumstances. My airline (Southwest) said they would "waive" any fees to move to a later flight. I do not know about any of the other airlines and whether they were as foregiving. No mention was made about any financial compensation if you incurred a fee to change transportation; I'm sure those were handled on a "one-off" basis.

I will mentioned that based on my discussion with SouthWest, the cruise line sends out a "Message" to the airlines alerting them of the situation. I'm pretty sure that once the cruise line sent the alert out, airlines were more willing to accomodate.

It was a pain, but there was nothing the captain could do about fog as the peir was closed by the Port of Tampa. We were waiting in open waters with 10-15 other ships attempting to gain clearance to the port. Luckily we were given #1 priority against the other vessels.

Southwest is always the most co-operative. The others - not so much. They usually want at least $50 to make this kind of change.

What happened is a shame but it does happen. I would think anyone who had insurance would have been able to file for any additional expenses they may have had.

As much as I don't usually back cruiselines on "fault" issues, I see no fault here. Mother Nature seems to have a lot to say this year - no matter where.

As for cold in Florida, we were there in January last year and it was so darn cold we thought we had been magically transported back to Niagara!!! It ran around 32-34 while we were there.

Completely agree, no fault of the cruise line; no one can control mother nature. We got a nice relaxing morning and lunch before getting off. I'm sure the incoming passengers weren't all that thrilled to show up to the pier with no ship present. I understand that they did not begin boarding until 3pm or 4pm. Luckily the pier in Tampa in adjacent to a shopping mall and area to walk around.
