Default San Juan

Hubby and I are leaving on the Adventure of the Seas on March 13.. We are having a TERRIBLE time trying to find affordable airfare to San Juan. Anyone have any ideas. Believe me I have tried every airline and every combo out there... I even thought of getting a flight to NY and then flying there but there was no money savings.. Spirit is about 20 dollars less in flight fare but there is an almost 10 hour layover in Ft Lauderdale... and they even charge for carryons???? Last year prices were around 600.00 for the 2 of us RT. Looks like this year it's more like $1000.00-1300.00. Oh yea, we are in Atlanta..... looks like something would be out there................

Well I would suggest driving down to Orlando Florida hotels are really cheap like $39.00 like Days Inn. Orlando's airport code is (MCO).
I found tickets for around $250 per person non-stop. I would drive down on Saturday and take one of the early non-stops Sunday Morning Jet Blue, American Airlines etc or Try Raeigh / Durham N.C (RDU) Jet Blue $239 Change in Fort Lauderdale.
Just a suggestion though stay away from Sprit Airlines there rarley on-time
and there are finacial problems that can stop all flights at anytime or go out of business I hope I helped. Have a great cruise. Ed

unfortunately, that didn't work either... It was over $1400.00 RT for 2... I am just at a loss for words at this point.... I guess this will be our last cruise out of San Juan....

You can find some fabulous cruise deals out of San Juan, but the air is indeed a killer....That's why quite often they offer dirt cheap prices to the locals to fill ships there. I happen to love the southern itineray, but the air from here the last time I sailed was like 319.00 pp cheap today I guess, but I do know someone who got 250.00 rt last year....have you tried Priceline by chance?

Long gone are the days when I remember,Carnnival Air used to offer 99.00 flight at 99.00 from NYC....you would think Atlanta would have good rates..

have you looked into the airfare that the cruise line offers? the flight times and connections are usually pretty lousy but you might be able to get some kind of deal? good luck finding decent airfare to San Juan, only other advise is to fly out of a smaller airport, avoid hub airports, airfare out of smaller airports can sometimes be cheaper. Have you looked into the discount sites like Hotwire, Expedia, Priceline?

Hi Cathy,
That is the one major drawback when cruising out of San Juan, the air fare is the killer...You may just have to bite the bullet and purchase something, in the mean time, keep checking, the fares change daily...

Thanks everyone.... We have checked and looked at every combo available... Looks like I am just going to have to book and deal with it... This will be our 3rd time out of SJ and I think it might be the last till prices on airfare drop. I looked at driving to Birmingham, Tampa, Orlando, Miami, etc. and all the different sites but it always comes up over $1000.00. If we didn't want to go to Aruba and Curacao we probably would have changed but now we have excusions, drink packages and dinner resv. sooooooooooo................... Plus we are cruising with people we met 2 cruises ago... Maybe we will get lucky and they will drop it a little. I am not going to book anything for another 2 weeks unless it falls............

What gets me is the cruise line can take me all around the Caribbean, for a week, entertain me well, feed me five times a day and it often costs less to do that than the airlines charge just to get me to the ship!
Things that make you go hmmm.
WE are booked on Serenade for 7th August, I haven't booked flights yet but I am shocked at the prices I just saw...

Flights in the snow bird belt, the northeast to Florida, have skyrocketed in the the past couple of years..always when I need them. Yet, yesterday I saw rates at 87.00 one way from Boston to Ft Meyers..It's a crap shoot, of time and luck..but these San Juan rates, mentioned are crazy

WOOHOO!!!! I booked a flight one way today to San Juan for $159.00. I am going to wait and see if they drop anything coming back... I almost fainted when I saw that rate on Airtran with 2 seats left... I grabbed my credit card and started booking... Just for the jollies, I went back to the site and checked and sure enough... back to 319.00 with 4 seats left...

Thanks for all the imput and if anyone sees anything let me know..

Good luck to everyone on finding something affordable...

The airlines will do it just the same as the hotels will do it with regards to rates. Congrats for getting that rate, but you still have to get home. (Devil's Advocate here)

That is a great deal on the one way. Looking at Cheap International Airline Tickets, International Flights, International Flights Deals - Vayama that date had a flight for 237. The return is looking at around 350 right now.

(not knocking you) but I could never book a cruise without having the airfare nailed down.

hmmm (I guess I just did that when I booked Disney Dream and SW doesn't have fairs posted yet for 2012). BUT, I'm pretty safe in finding a good deal from BUF to MCO.

I would never consider a flight out of San Juan, because it would be very expensive to fly there from BUF/YYZ.

Have you thought about trying flights a day or two later? Maybe the savings in flight would justify the cost of the hotel?

Well this will be our 3rd cruise out of SJ and we have never had a problem. Usually around $600.00 RT for the both of us... Since we usually book while on board (to get the on board credit) it's kinda hard to book airfare at the same time... Either way........ we are still going...... I guess we will just have to work a little harder when we come back.... but........... I STILL HAVE HOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just got to keep checking and hope you get lucky. We just got back from San Juan last Monday. I saw a price on Delta in August for $308.00 pp return from Detroit.I jumped on it and didnt see a better price afterwords. It might help to go a day early and stay a day over too if you can do it.

well my friends..... I booked a flight today... But there is a catch... we are staying 2 extra days in San Juan. AirTran decided today that they would once again jack up the prices and for the price of flying home on Sunday we are staying till Tuesday at a very nice hotel on the beach for less than it would have cost to fly on Sunday. The prices just dropped for the weekday flights yesterday. Even with everything added, (food, parking, etc) we are still going to come out cheaper and have a longer vacation....... so woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now it just needs to get here!!!!

Right now to fly in on Saturday and out on Sunday AirTran is over 1600.00 RT.... They just dropped prices to SJ for Fat Tuesday but they are only from Charlotte and Tampa... But all is good... One would think that you could get an affordable flight from Atlanta most of the time...
