Question Has anyone used Rum Runner flasks?

I'm curious if anyone has used Rum Runner flasks on a RCI cruise.

We don't plan to drink a ton, but the price for alcohol is ridiculous!

This is our first cruise and I don't want to start off in the infamous "naughty" room, but if we can get away with bringing a few flasks on board to save a couple hundred, that would be great!

I haven't used them but from what I've read MANY people have and I have yet to read or hear of anyone having a problem.

Take care,
Mike

post a link please!!!!! I am ready to buy plenty of cans of fosters beer at $7. God I hope they are not more expensive than that. But a bit of rum for my sodas would sure help.

BE WARNED* RCCL is starting to smarten up. There is a far more thorough search on ships leaving this month and next with spring break approaching. Case in point, I took a 7 night out of galveston on Voyager 2 years ago in March. Out of the 3 of us that used these, only 1 made it through untouched. Amazingly, he took it a step further as well and removed a 5 liter wine bag from its box, laying it flat between some clothes. Even that made it on no problem and served as quite the entertainment for when things seemed to shut down around 3 in the morning. However much you decide to bring on, spread it around as many bags as possible.

-Cheers

I love your comment "don't want to drink a ton just want to save a couple hundred!"

Not Picking on you, I'm in the same boat. (well probably different boat but you get the idea)

anyway just want to expand the question. So they thourghly check luggage, how close do they check you and your carry-on? Are you fully frisked and do they empty your carry on/purse, or is it like going into a concert/ball game? Do they go though this same routine with re-embarkment at every port of call?

They are probably profiling young people, I'm almost 40 with kids (did I just say that?) and not a likely candidate for this. I really don't drink much, but it takes much more alcohol when your belly is full from the buffet! I really don Heck they probably already have my number from posting here on this forum. I probably won't do it. I'm too chicken and will be nervous and then they'll think I'm sneaking something else on board. And being middle eastern won't help the situation. If you guys hear anything about a middle easterner trying to get liquids on board in April, it was just rum guys!!!!!

You know, if you have to get that sneaky about it, it's not worth it. I'm not trying to hide anything on board, no matter what it is, it's just not the thing to do. If you want to put some booze in your luggage, I wouldn't go out of your way to hide it. If they are going to find it, they are going to find it. We really should not be having a discussion on how to "hide" anything onto any public craft. Just putting something in your luggage is not hiding it. Just stick it in there and if they find it, it's theirs, they're going to dump it cause it's open container, so fill em with the cheap stuff. I really don't have a problem buying a few $7 beers, it just adds up so dang fast.

I found it, the ultimate solution! The cell phone flask! Just wear it on your hip!!!! Even comes with a phone holster to fit it.

IHAVETOHAVETHAT.COM - Cell Phone Hip Flask with Case - Looks like a phone, drinks like a flask!

link only good today (one deal a day type site)

Kidding of course, not planning to sneak ANYTHING onboard, just not worth it as paranoid as people are these days. But I thought this was funny.

I will probaly get blasted for this but who cares! Why! What are you going to do hide in your room and drink it.I think part of the fun in having a few drinks is the atomsphere of the lounge. Are you drinking just to get drunk and how much do you have to drink? Do you have to drink every night?A few drinks now and then is not going to cost that much it just seems like alot of trouble. But to each their own , everyone makes their own choises and has their right to their own opinons!

Google it.

Yes, have used successfully- Carnival, not RCI. And while I'm not a big drinker, and actually used it only one time on board with my soda card, I took the challenge

I used the larger one exactly as instructed, packed the filled container in a ziploc baggie just in case it decided to leak, and had no problems. And for the record, I also packed a regular small-size Captain Morgan (plastic) in DH's suitcase. These were both in the checked baggage, not in carry on, and both arrived at our cabin without incident.

I was just on the Allure of the seas on the Feb 27th sailing. I brought on 3 rum runners. (you can buy them in different sizes). We brought 1 vodka, 1 rum and 1 banana flavored rum. It was our first time bring them and I have to admit I was worried at first, but there was never any problems. I will say though, next time we are only going to bring flavored rum. It goes with everything, and is even great with just ice for those times you don't have any mixers handy. Wine is also a great idea to bring on board, but if you drink a lot of wine it might be wise just to purchase a wine package.

The last time I used them on RCL the rum runners made it through but the two bottles of wine did not...

I will be on the Allure Spring vacation week. Not to sure about bringing on my wine.
Usually I get the small one glass bottles and take some of those on. I wrapped them in paper towel, the newspaper then bubble wrap and put them in a ziplock. I used to hide them in shoes. I never got caught. I did read somewhere that the denser it is, the harder it is for the xray to see what it is. Wonder if they can tell what they are if I bring some that way.

Do you have to put your carry on thru xray when you get on the ship? I can't remember.....

Thanks for any input...

Yes, all hand-carried baggage is scanned.

plastic bag like containers for smuggling alcohol on board ships and to sporting events etc...they are advertised as being xray proof..and therefore very hard to detect when luggage is going through customs.

I bought a 'cruise special' last year and then chickened out and didn't take them...wish I'd tried it though just for kicks. lol

I have used them 3 or 4 times and have never been sent to the "room of shame" to pick up my bag. They work like a charm!

I was recently sent to the naughty room on Carnival for the very first time. We had always succeeded in the past. It got me thinking. What is stopping people from loading up their pockets with miniture bottles and walking right on? No xray just metal detector like airports. You dont want bulging pockets but it seems you could easily get away with it as long as the bottles dont have a lot of metal in the caps etc. Just wondering..

Default Just do it!

Don't fuss with pouring booze in mouthwash bottles or flasks. Just do it like me and have no problem, mon! Spread it out among your checked luggage so one is not too heavy. They random check bags and odds are in your favor. In 20 cruises I have never had a problem. This is from the Enchantment a few years ago but have done similar everytime.

The time of year definitely plays a large role in the success of any smuggling activities.
During spring break, when there can be an above average number of persons that are typically categorized as heavy drinkers, RCI does tighten up their search processes.
With that said, you have to be willing to risk being sent to the naughty room and returning with nothing...thus the overall expense of the trip will then exceed the plan because you will still have to buy more drinks.
Rum Runners are the best. IMHO.

In Feb.2010 on the Mercury we picked up 2 small bottles of vodka in St. Kitts. DH put one in each pocket of his cargo-type shorts....and he got caught going through the detector when we re boarded SOOO embarrassing But he wasn't sent to the "naughty room"-just put our name and cabin # on them and they were delivered to our cabin the night before disembarkation.

Talking rum runners way to go

To anyone looking for the ANSWER to the question, "How do I save $ on drinks on a cruise?" the answer is RUM RUNNERS! For the "nervous ones" here’s food for thought….. You are 1 of 2,500 cruisers on a smaller cruise they only skim X-rays to get things moving! Hide it well and you’ll never have a problem (you can google many diff. ways to place the runners and where yet I am not giving up my secrets lol) ! Plus man up please...I can't believe how many comments on this site are of ppl saying how scared they are. Alcohol is just that.. you wont be thrown off the cruise and sent to prision RELAX! No one I ever known in my years of cruising have been caught till this day, and if for some odd reason you do become part of the mere 2% who get caught that day SOO WHAT….ALARMS DON’T GO OFF THEY DON’T YELL HEY EVERYONE LOOK AT THESE PPL….NO! They will just bring your alcohol to a room with your name and room # on it and will have it sent BACK to you even, with ur baggage the last day of the cruise. Although be weary rum runners usually don’t get returned to you because they have no real way of knowing what’s in the bag, labeled bottles are more specific. Also to the people who are here commenting "well I’m above smuggling alcohol" Okay gooooood for you A.) If you were sooo much above us than whatttt brought you to this particular link on this website named "rum runners/sneaking alcohol into cruise ships …. b.) If u spend all day researching sites for subjects that you obviously have no interest in and feel so insecure about ur finances u mussstt give your unwanted comments to prove what? Someone is asking a question and deserves a specific answer, we dont care if you choose not to do things the way we do! C.) Also A cruise is well known as the "poor mans vacation" because it's a great, cheap getaway for those of us who can't afford to swing to Fiji this month. If your THAT RICH TELL ME NEXT TIME YOU ARE CRUISING AND YOU CAN GO AHEAD AND PICK UP MY TAB. Same goes for Non drinkers commenting…..really? Again feel free to read up on ways us partiers are doing things, but if you don't do it, again why leave an unwanted comment such as "well I don't drink". Thanks thats exactly the comment the person whos asking rum runners questions wants to read. We do not up at an AA meeting pounding patron shots (only to those who got nasty about it), and again what led u here. One more thing that erked me is the bunch stating how Cruise lines read these comments n up the anty. A.) You are either an employee yourself or have never been on many cruises in your life. Cruises happen 24/7 about one million ppl travel one line per 5months, so their concern is getting ppl on the ship ASAP so passangers could start spending money n ESP. To make sure they embark on time 2,500 bags go through on the smallest of ships, are skimmed and never thoroughly checked unless it's obvious. As I said b4 random checks usually happen round spring break time n if u have obvious bottles of alc. showin up in ur bag. I TAKE (AND MY FRIENDS…FAMILY) 2 large rum runners each time been on 10 cruises so far myself I’m 25years old so yeaa Also to the girl who’s rum runner tasted weird the directions really help with that….you were supposed to fill them with burning hot water days b4 n massage them correctly empty. N air dry. ALSO I even know of someone who got randomly checked on RCCL with 2 rum runners and they even let him get by with one whole runner awesome. They (the crew) aren't stupid and are human themselves don't forget. The more people drink the more money they tend to spend as well on other things on the ship and even back at the cruises bars because rum runners only last you so long and they know the business quiet well. Once partiers start drinking they dont tend to stop for a while so trips to their bars are inevitable even more so if you're liquored up on your own stash prior. So everyone relax and just be prepared everytime I travel with rum runners in hand I always bring about 400 dollars with me as a "just in case I get randomed and I wanna drink" Yet 10 cruises later I always go home with 400 dollars still in my pocket (yes thats how much I save on drinks I am a fish lol ) My answer is there and short although I know this comment is kind of long and "harsh" yet during each cruise I scan the cruiser blogs to learn new things and always see others comment things that have nothing with the posters questions and I felt it was time to speak my mind tis all. Cruisers are one of 4 people - The partier, the relaxer, the mingler singles, or the celebratory couples. To each is own and fun and relaxation is all that should be in mind. I hope people could take this post for what it is and nothing more . Back to the point.. rum runners are number one choice for simplicity, others have gone with the listerine bottles which works well with clear liquors and 2 drops of green food coloring. I've personally stayed away from this option because I feel as if that is something they have had to have caught onto by now mouthwash is not a necessity that everyone and their mother has 2 HUGE bottles of listerine in their bags for lets say a weekend cruise lol. It's all about being creative and simple ENJOY everyone.

We used them recently with no difficulty. I bought the 'Cruiser pack' which was 3 small and 3 large bags and filled them with Rum and they made it through embarkation in our suitcases OK and then after buying some rum on St Maarten they made it through the carry on xrays too...
