Which ports should we go on excursions (Splendour- 4/12/2011)?
Hello all and thanks in advance for your help. My wife and I are embarking on the Splendour of the Seas on April 12th for a 10 day cruise through Croatia (Split) and the Greek Islands (Corfu, Santorini, Crete, Mykonos, Athens, Olympia). We're not sure which ports we should go on ship shore excursions versus exploring on our own.
We are a 31 year old couple and very mobile and enjoy walking and exploring. With that said, these are pretty short days and we want to see as much as possible. I'm thinking we will go on an excursion in Athens so that we can see everything (and they seem pretty reasonable) but unsure on the remainder of ports.
I was on Splendour in 07; did a similar cruise. In Santorini; u can get around pretty easily; the ship docks in a bay and you have to take a cable car to to top of the town; which is called Fira; there is plenty of shopping; if u walk thru town, there is a bus stop and taxi's. You have to go to the other side of the island to the town of Oia. This is a picture postcard beautiful town. Nothing beats it; the buses run regularly, and so do the taxi's. In Corfu, we did ship excursion; we went to Achilleon Palace, which was just ok; we also went to a Greek Orthodox Monestary, where they press their own olives into olive oil. Very nice; and it overlooks the sea; which was just beautiful. In Athens, u can take a taxi to downtown area; which is the Acropolis; there are plenty of shops, and resturaunts in this area. Have not been to Olympia or Spit; we stopped in Dubrovnik, Croatia; I think Splendour alternates between Split and Dubrovnik.
