Default Excursion canceled without notice

We are cruising on the Explorer of the Seas on 12/23 and just saw on our on-line account that our Atlantis Aquaventure water park excursion that we had already registered and paid for, was cancelled without any message/notice to us.

Does anyone know why this would have happened? This is so disappointing for us.

Can anyone give us any suggestions to get there? The stop in Nassau is on 12/26 arriving at 2pm - which may be tricky since it is the day after Christmas, and possibly busy there.

That is very strange, wonder if they will credit your credit card?? Something to check on.

It is very easy to get over to Atlantis, just grab a cab. I was there last month, but did the ship excursion for the tour and they took us over in a bus. Had gone there years ago, and they took us over in a water taxi, didn't see any of those this time.

May-be call your travel agent or Royal Caribbean and ask why...

By chance was part of this excursion parasailing? If so, it might be because of a passengers death, in St Thomas who was parasailing from a Celebrity cruise, but RCI has canceled all parasailing excursions in the Caribbean for now...Call the line tomorrow and find out why. You should see a credit to your account soon.

It may also be your time of arrival. 2PM may be considered too late to start an excursion before dark sets in.

But it's very simple to take a cab over - you arn't allowed to use the beach though unless you pay. I don't know what the charge is. Haven't been there for a few years.

And true, anything to do with parasailing is cancelled. You will also have your cc credited within a couple of days. They do not give advance notice when they are cancelling or changing a booking made on-line.

It will be tight for time...IF the ship arrives on time & if you can get of quickly you still won't have much time there...probably dark or near as by 6pm.

This is probably a blessing in disguse for you. The aqua park tour is offered directly through Atlantis for less money than what you pay through the cruise line. It's $120.00 per person USD if you just take a cab directly to Atlantis - walk to the center of the casino and pay at the booth their. Keep in mind that the water park (aka - water slides, etc.) close at 7PM; therefore, you'll only get a few hours in before they close it down. Now -- you may want to check directly with Atantis "what time" they close the water rides down at because it was 7pm over the summer before we moved the clocks back, I can see if they up the closure time due to the sun going down earlier. Wouldn't be surprised that the reason why they canceled it is that you'd probably only get like 1.5 hours in before the sun goes down and therefore, it's not work the value.

Thank you for the comments everyone.

We have been credited back the cost of the excursion to our card - so no concerns there. It is actually what alerted me to the fact that something had changed.

I spoke to someone at RCCL pre-cruise planning who said that it had been cancelled by the shore excursion coordinators, but that there was no reason listed. I have written an e-mail to the shore excursion folks directly to inquire about the reason and any potential for change, but no response yet.

Atlantis reservations has sent me detailed information on their day packages, so we can always try that depending on when we get to the property.

The point about the late arrival and early dusk is a good one - I hadn't considered that. The excursion is pretty expensive, and maybe people don't feel that they get enough time in the park to make it worthwhile.

I really appreciate the comments, and though still disappointed, I'm feeling better about it now. Maybe it is a blessing in disguise.

I should also point out that my boys who are 11 & 13 will be REALLY disappointed about this.

Any other suggestions for active excursions or things to do in what appears to be our limited time with daylight in Nassau?

Just an update - RCCL responded to me today to say that they have cancelled the excursion for Atlantis Aquaventure due to the arrival time of the ship and the closing time of the park...just as a few of you had expected.

On a separate note, Atlantis had written to me to say that they offer daily rates of $120/adult and $80/child up to age 12, for the Aquaventure, and had some other on-property offerings. They wrote again today to tell me that they are raising their daily rates for adults that day, 12/26, from $120 to $135.

I suppose that there is no real hope that the ship will get to port early, right?

Between this, and no excursion offerings in Port Canaveral because it is Christmas Day, we're starting out disappointed and haven't even seen the ship yet! I hope that RCCL and the EOS can change our minds.

Sorry to hear that it is a time issue for the excursion to be cancelled. You may want to just do the tour of the aquarium, only takes an hour and you can still wonder around the property. Of course, not the water parks, but the beach, casino, shops, etc. It is really something to see..

It is tough when you are not at sea on a holiday like this, especially as you will be in a US port. One Easter we were in St Thomas on Easter, but, many stores were open till noon,as the vendors did not celebrate the holiday. Hope your cruise is fabulous!

Well...the 26th is Boxing Day in the Bahamas....so many things may well be closed....however, there may be special festivities...

and Trip, not to pick on you , but Nassau isn't a US port....perhaps you put a little bit of, uh, adult beverage in your tea???

Public Holidays - Bahamas | The Bahamas AND since Christmas itself is on a Sunday, many businesses will take Monday as the extra day off for the holiday.

That said, since Atlantis is a big resort, you can certainly head over and poke around....i saw some shops, the casino and a few other things...

enjoy! I just got back from Explorer...GREAT cruise....i toyed with the holiday cruises but 1) didn't really like the itinerary, nor the fact that it's the same for Christmas and New Years..and 2) it was a little too expensive considering the rather dull itinerary. (IMO)

In any event, had the price been right, i probably would have done 1 of the weeks...and just stayed on the ship!

enjoy your trip!

Do a Google search for Comfort Suites, Paradise Island. For the price of a room up to 4 people can use all the facilities of Atlantis, it is a block away, you can even check in and check out at the same time if you don't want to actually use a room. Lots of cruisers do this..... much cheaper than paying excursion fees, all you need is a taxi over.

I dont understand you are making it sound like this one little set back is going to ruin your whole cruise before you ever leave home. Get over it do something else walk on the beach do something.So you dont get to do what you planned I understand you and your kids being disapoint but why have such a negative attitude before you leave home I would be tickled pink if I was going on a cruise . Relax have fun spend time with your family your on vaction.Enjoy your cruise!

Actually Meg, no booze in my tea..I was referring to this part of the OP's post..... Any shopping in this port, will be a mini mart, on Christmas Day
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Between this, and no excursion offerings in Port Canaveral because it is Christmas Day....
DH, you really can't regulate other peoples disappointments. There are things that might not effect you, while others, will have a different take on things.
Dhill - we are excited to be going on a cruise, but with the expense for the holiday week we would have chosen a different itinerary/ship if we had known ahead of time what we know now.
Queen of Diamonds - our ship arrives in port at 2pm, and Atlantis told me that the park closes at 5pm - even the lowest Comfort Suites rate for that day @ $320 is not worth just the few hours to us - but it sounds like a great option for people who have a full day there!
We're finding that most water-related activities are done by 5pm at that time of year there. Now we know...pay attention to port arrival times while scrutinizing itineraries!
We'll find something else to do in Nassau - I'm just not quite sure yet what it will be.
Slightly off the topic to your booking but when we were cruising around Australia last month we had at least four of our excursions either moved to a different time or cancelled the day prior. The general reason was the excursion operator , not the cruise line, did not have enough bookings for the booked excursion.
We would simply go to the office and cancel their new time and pick another excursion, so though we were disappointed, we found a better one without a penalty.
In summary, you can pre-book all you want but be prepared for changes. Does not happen all the time but might as the dates come closer.
All the cruise line is saying to you, we have placed you in spot xn of xn available but if not enough spots fill up then the shore operator might say sorry , cannot make any monies on this one.
A lot of folks will not book till on the ship while others pre-book.
Cheers
All the best, other islands offer same ,so on your next cruise you can book something for all day , Even walking around Nassau is an experience or tell the kids the ship is empty so stay onboard and enjoy the water options
Choices.
