Default RCCL and CCL

Am thinking about trying RCCL again. It has been years since we sailed on her.
One thing we like is king size beds and every cruise we have taken on CCL is made up to a king but looking at RCCL website, looks like most bed are made up to a queen.

As far as the size of the ship, we have done smaller ships on CCL and this past Oct we did the Dream which I believe is one of their largest ship and the only difference I could see is more people so don't know if sailing on RCCL on one of their mega ships is worth it.

It seems that CCL has went down in the quality of food and service but maybe all cruise lines are cutting back. We will be Platium on this coming cruise this Dec so wonder if the additional perks is worth it??

Just did a comparison and this can't be correct.

7 days Caribbean out of Orlando w/balcony stateroom. NO UPGRADES.

Price on CCL for 2 people $1558.00 ( It says, total for 2 people)
Price on RCCL for 2 people $3303.00 ( It says for "Total for 2 People)

Did I do something wrong??

Barry,
What two ships are you comparing, does make a huge difference....As for king size beds, you need to try either the Freedom or Oasis class ships...It is very difficult comparing ships, a lot depends on newer, what itinaries and what time of year, like comparing apples to oranges...Yes, it is true, the Oasis and Allure are high priced, but possibly find the cheaper times to cruise and you can save. These ships are amazing and IMHO, worth the extra bucks...

RCCL does not sail at that big of a premium over CCL. Something wrong here with quote.

Just checked and the Freedom seems to be $50-75 more than the Dream. If your getting that big of a fare difference on the same date one ship must be near to sold out.

I will double check my figures. I was looking at a 7 day cruise to the Caribbean w/a balcony stateroom in Dec of this year.

Thanks!

Ray,
Those prices seem more in line, it is very difficult to find two cruises at the same time, with identical ports...Any new ship for any cruiseline is going to be more dollars, especially if it is a fuller booking, that will determine price.

If you look at the first 2 weeks in Dec, that usually has the lower rates, for that month..Then again like the first 3 weeks in Jan..great deals.

Check out Kuki's blog on the Breeze..He is on right now and has commented on the good food...service not so much it seems, but he is changing his dining option, so we'll see.

Trying to get a close to apples to apples comparison.

RCCL
7 nite cruise, Ship - Freedom of the Seas , Balcony. Depart Port Caraverl, 4 ports of call.
Depart Dec. 9th Total Price for 2 people is $2,063.00

CCL:
7 nite cruise, Ship - Dream, Balcony, Depart same port, 4 ports of call.
Depart Dec 15th. Total coast for 2 people is $1558.00

The difference is not that much but is it worth the $505.00 difference. And CCL has king bed.

The higher the category (balcony over interior) the larger the difference could be. The $500 sounds better, but that's a decision you have to make.

For example, at my homeport of Galveston, it's pretty much the same. Princess & RCCL do sell at a premium to Carnival.

Tough choice. I think you'd enjoy both cruises. I think I'd do the Freedom though, just because I think I'd enjoy it more. I wasn't that impressed with the Magic (sister to Dream) and I'm very impressed with the Voyager class ships and the Freedom is even better than the Voyager. Then again $500 would pay for a super excursion.

Good Luck!

The Freedom class ships are awsome. I would recommend the Freedom of the Seas.

If you sail out of Port Canaveral, Freedom of the Seas is a lot larger than the Carnival Dream; plus it has a lot more stuff to do onboard. This may explain why RCCL is a little higher priced.

Barry,
I absolutely loved Allure of the Seas, so far, my all time favorite ship. Listen to your wife and book it :-) There is so much to do onboard and you don't want to miss any of it...

I think my only concern is that there are SO many passenger that it may take a long time to board. We are both in our early 60s and can't stand too long in lines. With CCL we can get priority boarding.

Barry,
WE actually walked onboard, no waiting in line at all and we arrived around 11:00.. I seriously could not believe how easy it was...You will get your sign/sail card as you check in, also the agent will take the pic, so no waiting in like for that either. Once you get at the top of the esculator, they will be taking pictures, no lines for that either, but if you choose, you can just walk on by...This was the quickest embarkment I have ever had. Even once onboard, you would never know there were that many passengers, never lines to contend with, other than if you are in a stand by line for a show or at a parade, otherwise, the ship is layed out so, no one area is overly crowded.

I will however, suggest pre-booking shows, I had only done 2 and was sorry I didn't do more. We did have to go stand by and were able to get seats, but it is much nicer to just walk in....

Do not worry about the crowds on Allure or Oasis. When I sailed there were 5900 passengers. I to am in my 60's and did not have one problem. I went everywhere on the ship to all the shows; I waited no more than ten minutes to get into the theater; shore excursions would stagger the time u got off ship; the dining room was crowded; but no more than any other cruise ship with big dining rooms. You and your wife can have a great time on Allure or Oasis.

I will add one thing to my above post. The Windjammer is smaller on Allure than any other Royal Caribbean ship; but you do have other options for lunch or dinner; all which are free. Johnny Rockets serves free breakfast; as does the Solarium Cafe; central park cafe, and the main dining rooms. They offer free donuts and coffee on the boardwalk from 7-11. My personal feeling is that Royal Caribbean made the Windjammer smaller on this ship; so that it could get more people to go to the specialty resturaunts to try them out

Think the wife is going to book something this coming week. We are already booked on CCL in Dec but looking at spring or fall for our next cruise.

Think she is looking into the Allure.

I prefer RCCL over CCL now. CCL ships seem very boring in comparison to RCCL ships.

Ok, have spend a lot of time on the RCCL website today but still have some questions that I could not find answer too.

1. Since our next cruise (Dec 2012) we will be Platinum on CCL, is the perks worth staying with CCL?

2. A few of the cruises we took on CCL were suites so we were VIP status, is this also true with RCCL?

Donna, you said,
Quote:
I will however, suggest pre-booking shows, I had only done 2 and was sorry I didn't do more. We did have to go stand by and were able to get seats, but it is much nicer to just walk in....
I never booked a show on CCL.

Quote:

Can you dwell on this more in detail?

3. We were looking at a Junior suite and it still says, "converts to a queen bed".

4. Do they have room service 24hr?

5. I see there are several places to eat, do you have to pay for them or just the Steak House like CCL?

We have in the past when booking a stateroom we would like at the deck plan to see what was below us. We are looking at a suite on deck 14 but couldn't see a deck 13 on the deck plan.

6. Is the dress code about the same on RCCL as to CCL in the MDR. We noticed the last several cruises there were very few tuxes. I admit, I also haven't wore one the past several cruises, just a nice suite w/tie and sometime just a sport jacket.

Thanks for your replies.

To answer some of your questions, you'll need to let us know exactly what ship you are going to book with Royal Caribbean? They do differ...The newer Oasis and Allure give you the opportunity to pre-book shows, including ice and water shows online before you cruise. I found it a very good idea to do this, once onboard, the space is limited, but they let you stand in a line and 10 minutes before the show, "if" there are any available seats, they will let the people in line in. These ships have some amazing shows that you do not want to miss, there is also a good later in the evening, comedy show that can be pre-booked as well.

Not all their ships have this available, so it makes a difference as to what ship you will be on. Oasis and Allure have king size beds..

They do also, have a few different alternative restaurants that do require the extra service charge, they should be listed on their web-site, depending on what ship again...

I believe I read there there is a service charge for room service after a certain time and the dress code is the same as Carnival from what I have seen.

Barryn514,

I will answer a few of your questions.
1. Junior Suite is a nice size room; however; royal caribbean does not consider this a true typical suite; by this I mean; the grand suite, owner suite; aqua suite, get all the perks; by perks I mean;
priority seating at all shows
priority seating in windjammer resturauant(it can get crowded; so this is a nice perk)
priority seats at the pool
priority boarding and disembarkation
access to concierge lounge; where you can have breakfast, or just sit and have specialty coffee and drinks
concierge is on duty to help suite guests with anything; shore excursions, sold out shows, problems with your stateroom, etc

there is 24 hour room service
Dress Code is smart casual; by this I mean if you want to wear a tux or suit to dinner you can; if you want to wear a shirt and tie you can
Beds pull together to make one large bed; nice mattress
** if you have anymore questions let me know.

1. Since our next cruise (Dec 2012) we will be Platinum on CCL, is the perks worth staying with CCL?
