I take mine to Staples or Office Max and have them laminated. It cost almost nothing and there is no chance that they can get torn.

I am still amazed at how beautiful some of the cruise document packages can be - with Oceania, Silversea, Viking River, etc you still get a beautiful valet with passport pockets, etc.

But for most cruise lines - just like airlines, you have to print up your own documents now.

Have you read that some airlines are actually charging if you do NOT print up your own boarding passes now? I think it was Ryan air that charges something like $25 per person just to print up your boarding pass.

Default luggage tags

I saw this printer for making bag tags, maybe RCCL could get something like the Zebra ZXP 1 Luggage Tag Kit.

QUOTE=cruise planner;1445372]Here's the official announcement from RCCL:

August 6, 2012

Bag Tag Mailer Updates:
Please be aware that for the Royal Caribbean International brand, effective for all guest documents issued on, or after, August 8, 2012, we will be eliminating the ability to order a Bag Tag Mailer for all guests/bookings with the exception of Crown & Anchor Pinnacle members and Suite guests (Grand Suites and above). For all other Royal Caribbean International bookings, bag tags will now be included as a page within the eDoc ticket booklets, which can then be printed and attached by the guest. At this time, while we will still allow a bag tag mailing address to be entered within the CruiseMatch booking engine, please be aware that after August 8, 2012 no mailers will be sent to any addresses that are provided here for Royal Caribbean International bookings. At this time, these changes do not impact guests/bookings on either the Celebrity Cruises or Azamara Club Cruises brands.

I really liked the old way they did it where they provided us with blank luggage tags made from the same type of material the airlines use for theirs. Then we could print out the tags and mail them to our clients. Worked great.

Now, as was mentioned, we use packing tape and then attach the double sided tape on the end. When we get to the port, we just remove the backing on the tape and attach them to our luggage handle.

Often times, we just wait until we get to the port and ask for two blank tags, write our cabin number on them, and attach those to our luggage. We only put the cabin number on them because we already have tags with our names attached, so it doesn't take but 30 seconds to attach the ones they provide at the pier.

And by the way, here's some good advice. When traveling, NEVER put anything on your regular luggage tags other than your name, preferably just your first initial and last name. Thieves are clever and all they need is your phone number to find your address. It's very easy to remember a phone number and they know you're going away, so it's just asking for problems. If your luggage becomes lost, the airline just needs your name to find you. When you do your pre-flight check-in, you provide them your phone number. I would also suggest putting your itinerary and other information inside the bag, but not on the outside. If you have to put a phone number, use a cell phone number or a business number and not a home phone number. Bottom line is you don't want to have too much information displayed for others to see.

$1000 for a luggage tag printer?

I think that is made for companies who want to give away luggage tags at trade shows as a way to advertise their businesses.

I am sure RCL has the facilities to print luggage tags if they want to do it - the point is that they don't want to do it anymore. They want YOU to do it, just like the airlines now want you to print out your board passes.

Its just another way to save money.

Default Luggage labels

We too have been cruising for many years and totally dislike the idea of these so flimsy paper luggage labels that every one is devising their own, as secure as possible idea. l went along to "Staples Office Supplies" and bought a packet of 10 brown tie on luggage labels, cut my printed labels out and stuck them with Prit to each side, so simple, so secure and when you get off the plane take them from your bag and tie them on. The labels cost £2.
The thing is though we should not have to do this but l am a skinny tipper on board so l get it back one way or the other for sure.

We just wait until we get to the pier, get 2 of the well-made luggage tags from the porter, put our cabin number on them, and we're done. Takes 30 seconds and costs us nothing. Can't get any cheaper than that and no hassle.

We do the same as Cruiseplanner.....get to the pier and the porter puts the luggage tags on for us...he even writes the cabin number on them. Cheap, fast and I don't even have to write the cabin number

That was exactly what we did on our last cruise.

Smile Home Made Luggage Tag Option

Another option for your home made luggage tags. Use Avery 5265 8 1/2 x 11 labels. Print the tag you see on line on plain paper, print about 4 of them, then place them side by side on your scanner and you will have a full sheet of tags. Then use your printers copy option to print. The tags will be sticky on one side, just like the ones the cruise line used to issue. This is the same technique as printing them on paper and covering them with tape and punching a hole, but much easier.

what I liked about the stick on tags, is that I would slap a sticker on my car seats and on my case of water.

Can't tie on a luggage tag.

someone suggested the sticker sheets from staples. I will give that a try.

Great idea! I ended up using the clear packing tape method to seal them up for our last cruise and it was a pain to do and then still had to tape them shut on each bag. These tag holders will be a welcome addition!

Had those plastic luggage tag holders prior to our last cruise. We left for the cruise, got to the airport in the embarkation city and realized the plastice luggage tag holders were at home . Next time!

Borrowed a stapler from a kiosk at the airport and just prayed the tags would make it through to our room. They did!

Would appreciate feed back on this idea.

I have a pack of heavy duty badge holders from staples:

Staples® Heavy-Duty Badge Holders, Horizontal, 25-Pack | Staples®

They are not the right size. I saved my luggage tag from the royal website as a PDF document ( you can do this from where the file is open in your browser). I then used adobe (I have the full version) to type my family name on the tag. Did a "snapshot" to box the image of the luggage tag, and then pasted it in word.

I formatted the image to fit exactly into my badge holder. It went from the long skinny tag - (roughly 1.25x4") to the size of the badge (2.5x 3.5") - make it a wider image to fit my badge holder.

I will then use cable ties to tie the badge holder to my luggage. It's not the right shape that royal wants, but is just a wider picture (skewed/stretched) to fit my badge.

will this work?
