The fire was in the aft mooring area. All passengers were sent to the muster stations, life boats lowered but not boarded.

There were no fire related injuries. There were a few who passed out due to exhaustion and stress due to standing at muster for three hours.

All aft cabins from the rear elevator back are no longer usable. I don't know if they are actually fire damaged or not.

The ship has arrived in Freeport, Bahamas and will be evaluated by Royal Caribbean. The ship made it there under it's own power. Services are open, including Windjammer buffet.

Personal opinion: I would believe the next cruise, and probably one or two more, will be canceled though Royal Caribbean has not made that statement at this time.

I believe the fire started around 3:00 a.m.. Spending the night at muster would not be my idea of a good time. I wonder if they let people sit on the deck?

Take care,
Mike

One of my moderators at sister website Cruisereviews is aboard and I am waiting for his reply to my query.

Updates as of 10:00 central time....Grandeur has arrived at Freeport for damage assessment. The ship was headed for Coco Cay when the fire started. The fire was in the aft mooring deck. All guest and crew were mustered as a precaution. A couple of guests had panic attacks and one was treated for high blood pressure. RCI CEO Adam Goldstein and other senior executives should be on the ground in Freeport by the time you read this.

Here is a photo taken about 30 minutes ago from Freeport.

Latest tweet from Royal Caribbean Press Relations says the ship will overnight in Freeport. Guests are free to spend the day ashore as in any other port, and many have decided to remain aboard and enjoy a day on the ship.

Here is a picture of the exterior damage to the ship.

Not a good sight.

All, thanks for the reports! Why go to MSN for cruise news when you can go to CruiseMates.

edited to add that as of 1140 CDT, you can find "Quantum of the Seas Itineraries" under Cruise News on CM Home Page but nothing about Grandeur of the Seas. Someone should invest in a dictionary to look up definition of news.

Marc,
It's Memorial Day and we're Cruisemates not CNN. We don't have a 24 by 7 news department.

Take care,

This was not a small fire damage-wise. Here is a photo of Adam Goldstein in the South Pacific Lounge.

Thank you mike, its true. (Actually, I have asked them to change that headline) - we are not a cruise "news" site, but we are a commentary site, and you have to wait for the details to come out first.

My guess is that all passengers will be flown home from Freeport since Freeport has one of the best dry docks on the East Coast (it is where Triumph is getting its upgrade) - that is, if there is room.

Mike, Dave, and Paul; thanks for all the information (and update to CM site). I have gone to sea trade-insider at times for news but I have found CM to also be a good site for "commentary."

Again, thanks!

Marc

PS Still would like to see first hand reports of how the three hours at muster were handled.

As soon as my friend Sonny contacts me I'll get with Paul and we'll have a first-hand account of what transpired to post. Sonny has something like 100 cruises to his credit so the account will also be through the eyes of an experienced cruiser.

Royal Caribbean was definitely paying attention to the media mistakes Carnival made during the Triumph event. They are posting photos of the executives and officers talking to passengers and showing their concern.

Here is a good article about the event from a fireman who happened to be a passenger on board:

Royal Caribbean just announced they are ending this cruise and flying everyone home. Full refund of cruise fare plus a future cruise credit. No details yet on how big the credit will be.

With the recent litany of incidents on ships, the fear factor, was high as reported by video, on the news. It's undertandable. The poor passengers were on deck shoulder to shoulder, for 5 hours..that's where I would have been in trouble..I would not be able to do that...Crew did great, they said, which is calming...a very good thing

In addition, those who did not book their air with RCI will be made whole as far as rebooking fees. Those who did book air through the cruise line will have all arrangements made with no added fees.

Where is everyone getting their info on the credit part of it?
Nothing like that is mentioned on their website and I'm reading other post that their giving 100% of the cruise price and a $100.00 credit toward a future cruises.

Is the info from RC itself or just chatter?

Thank goodness everyone is ok and thankfully this did not turn into a PR nightmare for Royal Caribbean.

RCI has 25 guests who are either afraid to fly or don't want to do so for whatever reason. They are going to have to take a ferry from Freeport to Florida, and then a bus or train to Baltimore. Two days on a Greyhound bus ought to be enough to cure anyone of an irrational fear.

This looks eerily like the Carnival Ecstasy fire back in 1998. We'll know the actual cause soon enough. I'm glad there weren't any serious injuries.

Tom... it was so funny, when the Ecstasy fire happened (right off the coast of Miami) I was onboard the Elation, (an identical ship).

We had just turned on the TV, and we saw what looked like our ship - but blazing away. And keep in mind we had just turned the TV on. We at first naturally thought "this is closed circuit TV from the ship, but what are they showing us???"

Finally we checked the channel and saw it was CNN - and we were like "what the....?"

Then we figured out there was a fire. So, actually that was another time when CNN gave a cruise ship "disaster" almost full-time coverage, but it was because the ship was off the coast of Miami. so they could see it easily. and that was way back in 1997 or so.

RCI has just announced that the Grandeur will be out of service until July 12. All those on the additional five cancelled cruises will receive a full refund plus a 25% discount future cruise credit. Those on the cruise that was supposed to commence this Friday get 50% off a future cruise.

UPDATE: I just looked at the full update RCI posted and it says all of these cruises get 25% off a future cruise. Earlier this week they put out that those on the 5/31 cruise would get 50%. Not sure if they changed things or if it is a misprint.
