Default Return flight time from Port Everglades/FT. Lauderdale airport

Would I be crazy to book a flight for 8:55 a.m. the morning of our departure?

I know we'd have to carry off our own luggage but we SHOULD only have one suitcase and one carry item each (except my Aunt who might buy the ship out!) It will be the Allure if that might be a factor.

Only contemplating since it is direct and HALF the cost of the next flight which has a 1 1/2 hour layover and gets in 4 hours later back home. If this is way too risky it winds up being cheaper to get a hotel that night in Ft. Lauderdale and fly back home the next day. This is Southwest so even taking another airline costs $100 more per person when you factor in baggage fees. One room at $100 is cheaper than $400 in airfare but I really would like to get home that night!

Yes...it can be done...but is really pushing it.

Typically we've found that a 10am or later outbound flight in Ft. Lauderdale takes away the stress / pressure of making a very tight flight (not exactly our idea of fun right after a cruise).

Making an 8 am flight is certainly doable but be sure you're flying with an airline that you can deal with if you miss your flight.

I would definitely NOT advise that, for sure!!

You have to be at the airport at the VERY least 60 minutes prior to your flight. Figuring you'd have to leave the pier by no later than 7:30am in order to make it happen, the chances are extremely slim and none that you'll get off the ship in time to make that flight.

If you want to try it, go ahead, but I would make sure the airline is willing to put you on a later flight without charging you an arm and leg if you have to change. Otherwise, I wouldn't even think about it.

Sounds as if you'd be cutting it too close. I suggest giving yourself more time. After a relaxing cruise why rush to catch a flight. Give yourself some room.

I wouldn't say you're " crazy " for booking a flight that early--I would say though, that you making a big mistake. Sure, It's possible you could make it but the first thing out of dozens of things that sometimes can and do go wrong would mean a missed flight.

Oasis class ships have the best debarkation....Did the 9:40am flight with no problem was sitting at the airport gate at 7:30am with time to kill. The other two times on Oasis class cruises also did the 9:40am flight.

With that said anything can go wrong and you can be delayed. Debark with your luggage in hand and be at the exit door at 6am.

I plan to book the 9:40am (or alittle sooner) flight once again in the future when I cruise Allure. It does not stress me out one bit. On other ships other then Oasis class I like to book around 11am or Noon the latest.

I HATE long waits at the airport and being Allure is a Sunday ship which means Monday morning back to work I want to get home asap to unwind and start at least one load of laundry...

Enjoy your cruise!!

While, if everything worked out nice, it would still be too close. I would either book the later flight, or spend the night in a hotel and book this flight for the following AM...Good luck and happy sailing.

I agree with Cruisequeen. If you are using pier 18 and do walkoff, grab a cab and you will be at the airport super quick. Whether you do it or not is a personal choice. I do not recommend it for clients but for myself - always.

Waiting till 2 - 5 in the afternoon is ridiculous and I won't do it. The majority of people have to be back at work on Monday morning and don't want to waste that much time sitting around an airport.

Still, it depends on a person's personal comfort zone.

Just makes me wonder, when there are a few cruiseships returning to port, especially on Sat. and Sunday, why don't the airlines have fights around noon for all these travelers. There are usually early ones, that don't work when coming off a cruise, or later in the afternoon. I too hate sitting around the airport after a wonderful vacation, I just want to get home and unpack and get ready for work again...

I think the timing of the out going flights co-ordinates with the timing of incoming flights. Not positive about that of course, but if a flight comes in at 11:30 it's turn-a-round is an hour at least. That means 12:30, which wouldn't be too bad but a flight landing at 1 pm or later means a later turn-a-round.

There are so many planes who arrived at mid-night or so who stay on the ground for early morning departures but they don't allow any plane to stay on the ground long.

That's based on discussions I've had over the years and may not mean a darn thing

Another tip for those with very early flights...when getting off Oasis or Allure you have to go down an escalator or use the elevator however there is a line for the elevator with cruisers and their luggage. There is an employee (at least on my sailing) that will let you use the escalator only if you have a free hand meaning you must be able to handle all your luggage with one hand and have a free hand for the escalator.

Have your luggage in your cabin ready to go the evening before. 6am start heading out with your luggage. Try to have a free hand and use the escalator. Don't panic when you see the customs line....it looks long but moves fast. Hop in a cab and you are at the gate in no time. Cabin to gate takes me one hour.

Did the 9:40am flight three times and will continue to book my 9:40am flight in the future.

Kudos to Royal Caribbean for having such large ships and such an easy debarkation system!!

Carnival Breeze had a 6:00pm flight after the cruise... Nothing worse then getting off the ship knowing there is an 8 hour airport wait. At least it was a Saturday return so had the full day Sunday before back to work on Monday. Will never do that again....I rather not cruise then do that again.

Thanks everyone. I will spend the night. The flight the next day isn't until 10:45am. Now that would be the perfect time if I was getting off the ship. At least none of us have to go back to work the next day. All either retired or have extended vacation time:-)

Enjoy!

In our case...we just booked our own flight in March to and from Ft. Lauderdale (about an hour ago). Saved a ton of money on airfare too.

The last thing we want is alot of rush-rush-rush stress right after a nice relaxing cruise. We booked an afternoon return flight, and will enjoy a nice relaxing Windjammer breakfast before methodically disembarking about 10am. We've done this several times before.
