Default Quantum of the Seas cruise port construction halted

Preliminary construction of the new cruise port facility in Bayonne, New Jersey was halted on Friday after it was discovered plans for the port makeover included the removal of hundreds of memorial pavers that surround the September 11 "teardrop" memorial.

Residents were "outraged" according to NJ.com, after learning the $50 million project would include the "temporary" removal of about 300 pavers.

Frank Perrucci, chairman of the Sept. 11 Bayonne Remembers Committee, said he was told by workers at the site that the construction project would cut through a portion of Harborview Park -- where the "To the Struggle Against World Terrorism" memorial is located -- and would mean the "temporary" removal of about 300 pavers.

The memorial will not be affected and workers indicated that the pavers would be put back into place when the construction is complete in May.

The cruise port makeover includes a new Cape Liberty Cruise Port terminal building, a parking garage, an overflow paved parking area and berth improvements on land owned by Port Authority.

I read about this in the morning.

Can't leave Port of Bayonne as is....it can barely handle the Explorer. upgrades are needed.

I agree! Definitely needs improvement, that's for sure.

But to become 'outraged' over the temporary removal is going a little overboard, pardon the pun. Is it not better to temporarily remove them so they're not damaged and then replace them than it is to leave them where they may be damaged? To me, their plans show a great deal of respect and concern for the memorial.

Besides, if they're building around the memorial, I would think it would enhance the memorial and bring it more to the attention of the tens of thousands of visitors to the area, which is a very good thing.

JMO.

Sounds like a political battle between local factions and the cruise port is stuck in the middle.

I too don't quite understand, since they are only going to be moved temporally and replaces when the pier is finished??

No problem. Christie will just close the port to teach them a lesson.

I believe that if they restore the pavers after construction is complete, then no harm, no foul.

Take care,
Mike
