Default First Time for Royal

Ok, Finally decided to give it a try. Normally we always sail on Carnival, and always heard good things about Royal Caribbean, so we've decided to give it a try. Just booked this years cruise on Freedom of the Seas, so let's see what you got for us! From VFIP to first time cruiser, will miss the perks on this one.

When you come back, you can tell us about your experience on Royal.
I have enjoyed all my Royal cruises and am not a fan of Carnival, but it's nice to have the perks of being a repeater.

Even if you decide you are going to stay with Carnival because of the perks, you will love your cruise on the Freedom. The Freedom is a great ship, with a fantastic crew. You cannot go wrong sailing on a Voyager, Freedom or Oasis class ship with Royal. They are all destinations themselves, and the ports of call are extras thrown in to sweeten the deal.

Hello,
Like you John and Christine, I am also going on a Royal Caribbean cruise for the first time.
I have been on 18 Carnival cruises and will miss the perks of being Platinum level, I would have booked with Carnival but I wanted to do a transatlantic cruise to Europe and Carnival does not offer one so I booked one with RCCL....some things I have found out already that I don't like is.....RCCL does not allow you to bring non-alcoholic beverages like water and sodas on board, whereas Carnival allows each person to bring up to twelve 16oz cans/bottles. Also RCCL charges a fee of $3.75 for late night room service which is always free on Carnival, RCCL also does not have any self serve laundry facilities and ironing room, they only offer their laundry services....this normally would not be a problem but I am going on a 14 day cruise and will have to do some wash and ironing. But with all that being said I am going to remain positive that everything else is going to be just as good or even better than Carnival, I have heard so many great things about RCCL. Happy sailing to everyone

Perks are over rated in my opinion anyway. I was an avid CCL person and sailed on the Freedom for my first RCCL experience and loved it. Lots to do and see and the differences that ship offers over Carnival more than made up for my lost Carny Platinum perks. You will love it.

They won't stop you from bringing water and pop on RCL. We also bring pop.

I'll be leaving for my first cruise with Royal on Sunday. We'll be on the Navigator of the Seas. I'm a little nervous about the size of the ship since I usually sail on smaller lines, but I am excited to try something new!

Thanks everyone, glad to hear all the good comments. There's one comment that concerns me is that there's no irons / ironing boards available. I always have to iron my dress clothes every day before dinner. Can someone confirm that this is true? If so, what does everyone do???

This is definitely a problem for us.

Royal Caribbean does not have laundry rooms or irons available for guests. They never have as I recall.

We used some wrinkle spray (Downy, I think) on our last cruise and it was good enough for us. Other than that, you would just have to send them to the ship's laundry for a pressing. They charge around $5 to press a man's suit, same for an evening dress.

Now I find that strange that a newer and with more thrills and frills on this ship, that the designers wouldn't an ironing room would be necessary. I guess this is one area that Carnival has a leg up on Royal. This should of been a no brainer.

I have been on seventeen cruises plus I have sailed across the Atlantic and the Pacific on other occasions and I have never ironed any item of clothing.

We don't do laundry when we are cruising.

I don't agree - I have never considered ironing on vacation. I leave that at home. If something desperately needs pressing I'll send it out.

I sure don't consider this a "leg-up" by Carnival. I can't imagine something this trivial would be important.

I love my dress clothes neatly pressed, just the way I am. I always press my clothes before every evening meal. Ten minutes of my time doesn't ruin my vacation at all. Now my all day clothes are a different story.

I've brought a steamer on a few cruises which works "ok" but like some others, it doesn't bother me to have a wrinkle or two. If it's that bad, I'll have the ship's laundry service press it for me.

I have been on Carnival and Royal Caribbean.
I won't do a Carnival cruise again. Being from the UK (British) we found that we were treated like third rate citizens and on most things were an after thought. Everything was for the Americans and we had to fight to get information out of people. The real problem with this was when disembarkation day came. All American guests had their information and tags and where to be and so on. The few British (around 75 people) on board had no information and when asking crew for answers you got something different from everyone you asked. It made the whole holiday a shambles and it fealt that we were not welcome on board and were a burden on staff. It may have had something to do with Virgin Holidays organising it and getting discounts (not passed on to us.
So that experience has tainted my view of Carnival Cruises. Where as on RCCL we found that everyone is treated equal and like first class passengers no mater on cabin grade.
This is just my opinion (and my Wifes and the other British people felt the same) and could have been a one off cruise experience but I wouldn't want to risk it again for the price I paid.

I guess I'm an excellent packer I don't have an issue with wrinkled clothing. I carefully pack the day before the cruise. If onboard I have a wrinkle or two in any of my dresses not a big deal. If there was many wrinkles then I would use the ship ironing service....however that has not happened yet.

You won't catch me on any vacation cooking, cleaning, ironing or doing laundry.

Enjoy your cruise!!

It's true some things do get wrinkled and I believe most people just deal with it. A wrinkle or two here or there doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me. We still look good.

I have only gone on RCCL but from everyone I spoke to who went on both RCCL and Carnival, they always preferred RCCL. There is one dealbreaker for me. I go on the cheap, short cruises and RCCL goes to CoCo Cay while Carnival goes to Freeport. CoCo Cay is way better.

I'm surprised to hear so many Carnival haters on many of the threads. I've been out to sea for many of years between my Navy life and cruising for fun on vacation. I've never had a bad time no mater what ship I was on. Just being out to sea is so peaceful and enjoyable, I have a good time no matter what. Our meals have been great meals and enjoyed the shows, what more do you need?

Bottom line, they all pretty much go to the same ports, maybe a few stops are different. So once your at port, everyone sees the same thing. So enjoy you vacation, no matter how you get there.

I wouldn't call it hate. It's just that my DW and I don't care for the Carnival experience.
We enjoy cruising on Royal a lot more, so we won't be spending our time or our money on Carnival.

I'm back from my first RCI cruise on the Independence of the Seas. This was our 9th cruise, we have sailed on Carnival, Princess and NCL also.

The ship was absolutely beautiful! This was the largest ship we have sailed on to date and with the calm seas we had it hardly seemed like we were moving at all. As with any cruise line there are things we liked and things about RCI we didn't like.
Liked......The ice show and production shows were excellent and unique.
disliked.....There was no regular show time. The times varied and one had to keep abreast of the Compass or miss the shows.
Liked.....The buffet actually served most of the same menu items as the main dining room did, best food on a buffet at sea I have had.
Disliked.....The Buffet had strange hours. Open from 7am to 3pm and then from 5:30 pm to 10 pm. This was the first buffet on a ship I have been on that didn't have at least part of the buffet open 24/7

These are just a few example and most of the dislikes were minor. We would sail RCI again but we much prefer NCL and their Freestyle cruising better.
