Default Royal Caribbean 'tests' new Chops Menu On Navigator

I guess it was going to happen sooner or later - a cruise line extra-fee "upscale" restaurant putting items on the menu that carry an additional charge, and doing so after raising the price of admission from $30 to $35 each.

On Navigator Of The Seas, Royal Caribbean is testing a new menu for it's Chops restaurant. The new menu for this 'steakhouse' only has two steak choices included in the $35 per person reservation fee - an 8 ounce filet mignon or a 10 ounce strip steak. Gone are the larger 12 ounce filet and the 18 ounce t-bone. Instead, for an additional $18 you can get a 'dry aged' 16 ounce strip steak, or for $19 a dry aged 20 ounce porterhouse. A roasted 1.5 pound Maine lobster will set you back another $21.

Other changes include removing the oyster appetizer, the onion soup, and (perhaps most egregiously) the baked potato. The baked potato has been replaced with (brace yourselves) cheese tater tots. And also, you can order a dry-aged hamburger for your entree. No kidding. They really think people are going to spend $35 each and then want to sit down to a hamburger and tater tots? Sadly, some will, and apparently have, because Royal claims they are getting 'good reviews' of this test menu. And that is bad because it means it is likely to be rolled out fleetwide.

Apparently if you want a big steak at Chops, the price of dinner will soon be $53.

Historically, RCI rolls out changes that shake up their fan base mostly at the same time, instead of spreading the changes out. I guess the logic is to get all the grumbling out and done with in one fell swoop. They just reduced the value of the onboard cruise bookings, and I predict they will roll out this new Chops menu fleetwide, perhaps with a couple tweaks. I also heard they are playing with the menu for Giovanni's Table which eliminates lamb chops and a couple other items, so that will probably be coming soon.

It would not surprise me if down the road cruiselines eliminate the MDR and have buffet only which would force people that don't want buffet to eat at the specialty restaurants with a fee.

Tater Tots are popular at school cafeterias ....

I have never been on a ship that has a Chops that we haven't dined there at least twice. That will now end. I will not eat tater tots and I sure as heck won't pay to eat them. Taking away something as simple as a baked spud is going over my line for Chops. I'll just stay in the MDR.

If that comes to pass, I will not be cruising very much at all.

Sorry for asking this, but being from the UK, What are "Tater Tots"? We don't have and have never heard of them over the pond. I know we say "Chips" and that you say "Fries" and stuff like that, but never had the joy of experiencing Tater Tots in any restaurant when in the USA.

Tater Tots are small cylinders of grated potatoes that are deep fried or baked until golden brown. I think it was actually a trademarked name by Ore-Ida Foods, who first made them, but as with words like 'aspirin' it is used generically for the version made by all manufacturers. They are essentially minced up 'chips'. I happen to like them as part of a quick meal at home or at a drive-in restaurant, but they have no place in a supposedly upscale dining room.

Here is an image of tater tots.

Great Dave but not what I was expecting to go with Steak as a side dish. We call them "Potato Croquettes" over here.

I've heard Royal will be adding the baked potato back to the menu, and will have two sizes of the filet and sirloin steak: 6 and 9 ounce filet mignon, and a 6 and 12 ounce sirloin. It's still just two types of steak though. I am a ribeye fan personally.

No word on whether the tater tots will remain or are being replaced by the baked potato's triumphant return to the list of side dishes.

Rumors of the baked potato's demise were, apparently, greatly exaggerated.

What I read into this is the so-called "good reviews" weren't so good in reality, just manufactured spin (dare I say lies?).

I honestly do not know how they could have "chopped" so deeply, and not gotten a consumer pushback....

Royal Caribbean has lost their marketing mind. I don't know any Steakhouse; Mortons, Ruth Chris, etc that serves tater tots. If defeats the purpose of having an upscale steakhouse on the ship. However, Dave said Royal is testing the waters on a few ships; and will most likely look at feedback from the passengers.

Well, RCL has eliminated the main dining room on the QoftheS. People complain so much, they eventually get what they ask for. No main dining room but a dining room that is formal every night.

If you're referring to my post - it is NOT a joke. There is not going to be a main dining room on the QoftheS and there is going to be one restaurant that is formal every night. There will be several to choose from, but no main.

If you sail Quantum let me know how you enjoy the dining. I doubt I will sail it or Anthem; they don't have anything that appeals to me

I may be a bit cynical... but doesn't this seem to be "baby steps" towards paying for everything you eat on board, eventually???

Eliminating the MDR seems like step one in the Grand Master Plan.

Eliminate the dining room they did however the food choices in the no fee restaurants are great not to mention Lobster available every night at no charge. However Queen Quantum's rates are high so I'm already paying for the lobster in the cabin price.

I agree with what you are saying....I'm sure cruise lines would love the Grand Master Plan of no free dining onboard. If that would down the road ever happen I'm sure there would be many cruisers that would give up cruising including me.

I agree a lot would give up cruising. We were on Celebrity last week. We did pay $139 for the dinner package of 5 meals and I would do that again easily so I suppose that is the start.

I bet it will start with just the buffet being no charge, and (small at first) fees for everything else. Then the buffet starts getting smaller.... and shorter hours....

As for NOT cruising anymore... Don't worry, they'll put something in our drinks so we will get sleepy... very sleepy...zzzzzzzzzzz

I'm going the Navigator of the Sea for the first time. Leaving Galveston on July 27 for a week. Haven't been on RCCL in a long time. Looking forward to a brief getaway.
I usually do main dining room My Own Time arrangements. I always try at least one of the specialty restaurants on any cruise ship I've sailed, and for the most part have been very good. The only bad thing for me about this cruise is that this will be my first solo cruise. However, I know that it will not be hard mingling and chatting with fellow cruisers.
Anyone else on this blob going to be on the Navigator of the Sea July 27ty? Looking forward to meeting everyone.
