Looking to book Explorer the only sailing working with our dates is the LAST sailing before it goes to dry dock. Please share thoughts or concerns you would have. I have heard issues of crew getting a jump start on work and closing public areas, carpet starting the get torn up etc...
If it was the itinerary that I wanted from a convenient port, yes I would sail on a ship before it was going to dry dock.
Some years ago we sailed on the former Celebrity Mercury before it was going to dry dock and we had a excellent cruise.
Carnival Liberty New Year's Eve 2007
Liberty of the Seas 5/2008+11/2009
Allure 1/16/ 2011
Vision OTS 2-14-2015
Booked Allure of the Seas... 2 / 21 / 16 *Last Gang Cruise*
Booked Celebrity Equinox ... 4 / 4 / 16
This is a hit or miss issue. Typically when they are headed to dry dock, they may attempt to "start" some of the work in advance to prep the ship for work. I've seen situations where they may shut down a lounge or otherwise during the preceeding sailing to accomodate. If the price and route is great for you, I'd say sail and enjoy; it would be fine...but if you can get a sailing date after dry dock, even better.
It would have to be a discount for me to go due to potential issues.
Might want to check out why they are going to dry dock. Sometimes it's for engine refits and such and not new areas so there might be less chance of disruption. I've heard people going and say it was awful and also some who said they saw nothing going on.
It's kind of the same issue with going the first sailing after dry dock or a new ship. They are still working out the kinks, testing new parts, the crew isn't familiar with all the new policies and systems. It's a gamble.
We were on the last cruise before drydock once and the ship was more than ready for it; carpet was very worn, everything was is desperate need of replacing, there were areas closed, etc., etc.
I agree with aerospace; it would have to be a big discount or an itinerary I really wanted and couldn't go any other time before I would consider it.
