Default Bermuda Moving Forward with Dredging

‘We’re moving ahead with dredging’
?We?re moving ahead with dredging? - Bermuda Sun

Tourism Minister hopeful Quantum of the Seas will come to Bermuda in 2016
Simon Jones, Senior Reporter

This coincides with our thread below about "Chinese people on Quantum" where Dave Beers said he thought the decision to send Quantum to China might have had something to do with Bermuda not dredging its port for larger ships.

So a new question to ask is, "Is the Quantum move to China also serving to placate that market's desire for a new ship until the 3rd Oasis-class is completed?"

The third Oasis may have a lot of Quantum features added to it, just as RCI has added Oasis venues to the older ships. Thus, China gets the Quantum and then it returns to the U.S. and is replaced - directly from the shipyard to Shanghai - by Oasis III. And the new Oasis might have the Northstar, the iFly, perhaps the main dining room broken up into the specialty restaurants (Adam Goldstein alluded to it in the Google chat he did about dynamic dining).

A lot of good questions and I think you hit the nail on the head...Looks like they are looking towards the future and having one of the new big ships come there??

Dave, you are right on the money again. (Pun intended, if not a good one)
The Quantum class and Oasis class ships are all the same length (give a foot here or there on difference) just different on width. So both will make good use of the new ports and they can test other ports to see if she fits.

The question I would like to ask to you all is: If the dredging was complete on time and Bermuda is open for Quantum, would she still be going to china?

I am sure that she is because there is a lot of money to be made in China.

Bermuda was important to the Quantum's U.S. rollout. When they had the first big media event last year in NYC with an iFly to demonstrate and other eye candy, representative's from both the government and the tourism department of Bermuda were in attendance.

Then they bungled the dredging project.

There is a contract for a third Quantum-class ship though, and that is also something to keep in mind as to where it might go.

I think the question is - if Bermuda had made this commitment a year ago, would the decision to take the ship to China still have been made?

It is hard to say, but it seems logical that it played a part, and I can say that I have seen the cruise lines do some pretty surprising last minutes changes when ports don't "play ball".

Remember when Alaska passed a head tax on every passenger - the cruise lines gave them a chance, but they didn't roll it back, so they then responded by reducing capacity there by a pretty significant % (I don't recall how much now, so I won't cite a number), but it was enough to get the legislature to roll that tax back by the following year.

But let's not forget that Anthem has been reassigned to take Quantum's place in NYC just one year later. And there is a glut of ships in the Caribbean now, so in that respect the decision to send the ship to China makes sense.

Plus there is the third Quantum - and the new Oasis coming out.

My gut feeling is No. I do believe Quantum was going to be in Jersey for awhile and another ship was going to China.

Rumor on the street is an Oasis class in Orlando which would have Freedom free to go elsewhere or do short cruises and have Enchantment go somewhere.

Way to many ships in the U.S. to the Caribbean. Good for the cruiser we are getting awesome rates not good for the cruiselines they want the higher rates cabin availability tight.

Royal does see the need to have a new build in Jersey so Liberty then Anthem it will be. No complaints here....

Bermuda is a beautiful island for sure. but many cruisers have been there several times.
It would not attract the numbers op passengers that China will.
