Default Freedom of the Seas unable to dock in Labadee

(4:25 p.m. EST) -- Passengers onboard Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas were forced to skip a scheduled port stop at the line's private island of Labadee after Haitian protesters took to the waters around the island.

"When Freedom of the Seas arrived to Labadee, Haiti, the ship encountered a number of locals in small boats staging a protest," Royal Caribbean said in a prepared statement. "Although this protest was peaceful in nature, it was clear that if the protest continued, there would be a significant impact on our guests' ability to enjoy Labadee. Therefore, Royal Caribbean cancelled Freedom of the Seas' port call to Labadee."

The ship stayed out to sea.

A cruiser onboard Freedom of the Seas when it attempted to dock at Labadee and wrote about it on the Royal Caribbean message board. "Tensions were rising, protesters won. Out of safety the captain is leaving port. Final count of protesters was 14 boats with an average of 25 per boat."

There has been no official word what sparked this particular protest, but similar demonstations throughout Haiti are related to a recent round of elections.

Royal Caribbean has not made any decisions about future Labadee calls. The next scheduled port of call is by Navigator of the Seas on January 21.

"We will continue to closely monitor the situation and are in close communication with local and government officials in Haiti

Let's hope that cool heads prevail. The people of Haiti have a lot to lose if passengers don't stop in Labadee.

Personally, I can't wait till they open up Cuban ports to our cruise ships.

Carnival is cruising to Cuba but it's not a regular cruise. People on this cruise are expected to do something that helps the Cuban economy. Until sanctions are lifted Americans can't go to Cuba just to have fun. At least that is the official word from the US government.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens with Labadee and when and if the Protesting stops. At first it was thought to be due to the election but now there's talk of it being issues between Royal and the workers on Labadee. Lots of speculation as to what Royal is going to do with replacing this port if things don't quiet down.

I am sure that Royal will come with something for us. I feel bad for the people who work in Labadee because they are the ones who could end up losing a good gig.

Once the dust settles we might find out what the real cause was.
I'm confident that Royal will find a nice replacement for us in the event Labadee is pulled. I've heard some say Costa Maya as a possible replacement, could just be talk, I seriously doubt Labadee will be out permanently.

I'm good with whatever truthfully, just being on Allure with the gang all good for me.

We happen to like Costa Maya.

But a cruise on the Allure is always special no matter what ports the ship visits.

I bet, once it is safe to go to Labadee, they will have ships go there, they have spent lots of dollars there on upgrades just to skip it, not going to happen, IMHO..

There was a time many years ago, when the ships didn't go to Labadee for a long time..lots of issues with the local population..let's hope this is not a repeat.

It was reported by a passenger on Freedom that one of the signs read something like "Finish the project you started RC ".....something like this. I want to state that this is just what I'm reading and do not know how factual this is.
"The Passenger "said there are pictures with the protesters and this type of signs , I'll see what I can find.

Here's a recent article

I feel bad for those poor people and I always tip well. I tip the person who gets us loungers, the drivers of the trolleys and the band that is usually near one of the beaches.
However the locals must understand that Royal does bring in funds that would otherwise be unavailable.

We were supposed to cruise on the Anthem today with a first port in Labadee .Friends of ours who are on the ship now were told that instead of going to Labadee they may be going to Belize but that was just rumor.

LF, looks like your friends got out just in time to avoid the blizzard. A cruise on the Anthem will be great no matter what ports it's bound for.

Re / Labadee, there always seems to be some confusion as to Labadee being a private " island."
Labadee started out as the French word spelled Labadie. It's a peninsula on the north coast of Haiti, which shares the Island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic.
RCCL has a contract with the Haitian Gov. through 2050 to operate a sectioned off area as their private stop. They pay the Gov. , at last count, $ 12 dollars per head per pax. and employee approx 300 people locally. They also allow approx 200 private vendors to set up shop there for a cut of the sales. So, as far as Labadee being an island, it's not--it's a fenced off area basically rented to RCCL.
I have been there several times and personally like it,. The vendors can be a little pushy but if you're respectful and politely turn them down, you'll have no problem.
I like the small roller coaster there called the Dragons Tail--it's fun and not too dangerous. I don't snorkel but from what I've seen after several trips there, there's plenty of clear, clean water for those who like it and the beaches are fine. RCCL has put a lot of money into the place over the last few years, such as building a nice pier, whereas once you had to tender ashore, added an over the water zip line, which I would love to ride but with my back problem I can't, and just some over all improvements. I think it makes for a great day stop and no, you can't wonder around the "island " as it's not an island ---it's a fenced off area and has security but it's plenty big enough to have an enjoyable day. I love to prowl the shops and as I collect those colorful paintings, to me it's heaven as they are everywhere and are cheap. They will bargain with you on most any items but I always let them win, as a matter of respect--a couple of dollars isn't going to make or break me but will help them for sure.
So, when this little dispute or whatever it is is settled, I'd say go, enjoy your day and be happy !
