Default Drink Package Question

We've been toying with the idea of pulling the trigger on the Deluxe Drink Package this cruise. I see that soft drinks are included but I seem to remember reading that you can't just order them in the restaurant, or other venues as if you didn't have the package. It seems with the package, you have to have the cup with the chip and use the machines as if you had the soft drink package. Anyone know anything about this?

I have purchased the drink package several times, most recently on the Allure of the Seas April 30th. You will get the Coke cup in your stateroom to use at the soft drink machines. I do not drink a lot of soda and I fine the cup a pain to carry around, so if I want a diet coke I have gone to any of the bars and ask for one and they serve it right up. The Coke cup is awesome to use at home here in Florida, keep drinks really cold at the beach, etc....

You can also get soda in the dining room without carrying the cup. Just them your room card.

I was concerned reading the other posts. It would be most awkward if one had to carry around such an item during formal dress evenings and so forth.
My guess is that it may look very tacky to most.

I have seen people wear beach towels and wearing flip flops on formal night in the public areas. I imagine its okay for them to use the cup.
