My question is. If you go out on an American ship and come back on same ship [so exactly same people on board] why do you do immigration at all on the ship? In England the ship checks your passport...

Hands up! We fell foul of this one on an American ship! Went off to breakfast [not end of cruise but middle day of back to back]. However, felt that cruise there was too much made of it...
