We were just there in May and the Riverwalk is actually right at the cruise port. You can drop your luggage off and if it is really busy you can wonder around the riverwalk and shop or window shop...

We had a great time, you can walk but we took a cab as we were unsure of the area. The crew from Carnival Conquest told us about it as that is where they go for the day.
Cab cost about $3-4 each...
