Default honesty when posting for cruise mate

This forum is a very good and useful place for trying to find a cruise mate and many successful matches have been made.
However, all who post here should be honest in revealing facts about themselves that a prospective cabin mate should know and consider before deciding to share a cabin.
Some minor personal habits should be revealed, such as smoking, snoring, etc.
While these might be an annoyance they can make the other person quite miserable and uncomfortable.
Most important are facts about illnesses, especially, possible, communicable diseases.
Wanting to save money, by not paying a single supplement, and possibly sharing with someone whose company you might enjoy are nice.
However, revealing facts, that could, possibly, put a cabin mate's health at risk, are a MUST!!!!
It's, then, the prospective cabin mate's decision as to if they, still, feel comfortable with sharing the cabin
It's not my purpose to offend anyone, just to make everyone posting on this forum aware of the issues.
Thanks for understanding.
JOAN

I see your point, but who would post for a roommate and say "by the way, you might catch.....if you are near me?"
I wish all posters would be specific as to where they are from and/or which port they'd like to sail from. Some posts are just too generic and more specifics are needed.

They don't necessarily have to post the fact, initially, but in communicating by personal e mails or by phone they should reveal all the facts.
Not right to expose others to one's illness, just to save money.

So Joan,

Have you had a problem with this in a cabinmate you were coresponding with, or even cruised with? I'd be worried only if the potential person was not easy to talk with by phone and by writing or if they were not fluent in English. Of my 3 cabinmates, only one did not communicate much with me, but he was the director of the singles group I went with so at least I knew he had done this before ! My 2nd cabinmate was not a pefect match either but I was determined to go on a cruise from a certain port on a certain weekend and let that override the fact that we had different interests and expectations.

I look at cruising like when I was a kid going to college for the 1st time and didn't meet my dorm roommate till I arrived. And now it's only for 7 days. I still don't know how bad I snore. But I carry a good pair of earplugs and a dark sleeping mask in case the person 6 feet away from me inadventently keeps me awake. Maybe I should also carry a box of pollen & virus masks to be safe from other things goin' round.

Sumpthin like this???

Cruise mate wanted for Caribbean 5 nighter.
Married technical, but looking. Impeccable hygiene (bathe at the pool EVERY day). Compulsive gambler, drug addict. Easy going (not one single current restraining order out on me). Last STD check showed no change. Still have some of my original teeth. I like to video tape people while they sleep. Semi-nocturnal. Must have TV on to sleep. I wear several squirts of cheap cologne. I will bring satin sheets and a Kenny G CD.

I have been lucky and used this forum to find 3 cruisemates over the past 4 years. All 3 were more than fine - one was outstanding - we got along great and even hung out together and have kept in touch since then. The other two were both considerate and polite. I took the time to get to know each of them through email and phone calls - and when I was considering a male roommate (I'm female) I also got some references to speak to on the phone. That said, understand where Joan was coming from and would like to trust that anything that might create a conflict would be revealed. The more information the better - especially in the subsequent private emails. I like Ed's precautions with the earplugs and eye mask - my last cabinmate liked to fall asleep watching TV and while I said it was OK, I think he felt awkward about it and didn't have the TV on when he would have liked to - the earplugs and mask would have allowed him to feel more comfortable with following his normal routine.

I also agree with RuthlessBoss - it would save LOTS of time if people were very specific about what they want to do in the heading - some headings say "Looking for cabinmate" - well, no ****! Thats the title of the board! Something like "7 day cruise in April from Florida"is more helpful when scanning the entries.

While I think some of you are giving Joan a bit of a hard time, I think she makes a point that we should be as upfront about everything as we can be so that everyone has a good time. At the same time, if you tend to be a high maintainence person,or someone who has a lot of environmental sensitivities, rooming with a stranger might be too much of a risk.

I am putting together my own email list of people who like to cruise that I can contact when I want to get away - everyone one on will have at least one reference if I have not met them in person. If anyone wants to be included on that list let me know and include the phone number of a previous cruise cabinmate.

If a person responding to a post of another has specific questions regarding a potential cabinmate perhaps then the respondent should ask the poster directly.
