We have been to Coz 2 times and both times we have both it in some of the shops, everyone sells it. But the last time we were there we had our driver take us to a supermarket. We looked like the Spanish people in our area shopping at a Walmart. It was such fun, eveything was in there from jewelry to clothes, liquor, VANILLA, food toys etc. Such fun!
I brought some Mexican vanilla home from a vacation in Puerto Vallarta this summer. Just medium sized bottle, it was pretty cheap, a little more expensive then the fake extract they sell in America. It was a pretty bottle and my mother loves to cook so I thought she would like it. She didn't open it till this christmas when she used it to bake. Now let me tell you my mother is an excelent cook, but I swear to god this vanilla made every thing taste 10 times better. Relatives who came by asked her for the "new" recipie. It smells so good and, tastes so good. I put some in a little potporri burner and my house smelled amazing. My cruise stops in Cozumel in just a little over a week and about a million and a half people who had my pecan pie this Christmas have placed orders....
I know you can get vanilla in Cozumel at Cinco Soles. Its really inexpensive. I just finished up my bottle from last year. Thank God we are going again on March 25th so I can stock up on some more. What a great excuse for taking a yearly cruise!!
Joyce, it's just vanilla that you bake with. So good there! I bought a small bottle. What a mistake. I should have bought so much more! I'll be there in December. Will have to wait until then, but will stock up this time. Yum!
Mexican vanilla is definitely unique but a buyer needs to beware. Vanilla should be labelled "coumarin-free" so do check labels and buy from reputable source. I found this website with some good advice..
All cruise ship pax have to run a gantlet, so to speak, of shops in an air-conditioned building when you get off the ship in Cozumel (at the International Pier). When you buy 4 or 5 bottles, they get heavy, so you might want to consider buying your vanilla at the very last shop before you re-board the ship. I was surprised that they didn't gouge you on price there.
Remember when you were a kid? How the kitchen smelled when your mom was baking (don't know how old you are) This Vanilla is REAL....not the stuff we get in the States. Its PURE....very different...To smell this and to smell (the States) say Mc Cormicks is like night and day...Like a fine perfume compared to Walmart cheap junk.
Hope you have the opportunity to try some....
