We will be going to West Caribbean in Dec (Lord willing) with a stop in Belize. Can anyone recommend some unique gifts that we could give to family as Christmas gifts?
I thought it would be cool to get them something from there.
We visited Belize last December and did not find much in the way of shopping. We did buy a couple of baskets from some type of a co-op where they carried items that are actually made by the Belizian people. I also bought a braclet for my best friend that was unusual from a roadside stand. She really loved it and says she has received several compliments on it. I wish I had thought to get myself one.
There are some stores right were ship docks that sells handmade woodcarvings. I got my friend a bowl in shape of a leaf(she loves leafs). It was signed on back Belize and date. Was very neat, they gave me a discount for using cash too. This is not a shopping port, so you will only find souvenier type stuff.
In the issue of Lonely Planer,Belize, Guatemala they list several places. For souvenirs visit the National Handicrafts at #3 Fort Street in Belize City." The Maya still make a varity of traditional handicrafts. Most striking are the veavings, embroidery, baskets, ceramics and wood carvings." page 181 Lonely Planet book on Belize
Hope this helps.
