We just completed a tour of the South Pacific islands and all the prices for black perals were high. We talked with one very disappointed traveler who had purchased a set of black pearl earings only to have one of the pearls to fall off the setting during the cruise. We found cultured pearl prices to be the best in Hong Kong, however be sure and use a local that has been in business a long time and not a street vendor.
SSLETSCRUISE----I am going to provide you an alternative to Hawaii. We have purchase s three sets of pearls in Hong Kong and upon returning to the US we had them appraised and insured. The pearls were worth about three times what we paid and we have never regretted any of the purchases. They were excellent quality. After a few years they will need to be restrung and finding a quality re stringer here in Dallas has not been easy. Now getting to Hong Kong might be a little difficult however there are cruise ships that stop there. We purchased at a jeweler in the shops at the Hyatt which is a short walk from the cruise docks. Good luck
Some years back, I bought a teardrop shaped black pearl pendant in Venezuela. Two years later, same store. I wanted to find one for my sister. Price had gone through the roof. I dont know if that was just that location or what, but I never did get her what she wanted. Would have had to mortgage the house!
