My parents, husband, daughter and I are going on a cruise to Egypt in May. The ship docks in Port Said and then Alexandria. The only trip to Cairo from Port Said is an overnight that will cost us $2300 for the 5 of us. It seems a little outrageous when I price everything out separately to about 20% of that. We are hoping to be able to do an independent overnight tour to Cairo and catch up with the boat again in Alexandria. We are not sure what facilities we will find in Port Said to do this, and I have not been able to find much on the Internet. Does anyone have any advice for us? It would be much appreciated!
Port Said is a cruise stop for us next month and we're taking a ship sponsored tour to the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sphynx and EITHER the Step Pyramid of Sakkara OR the Egyptian Antiquities Museum in Cairo. In fact, I'll be posting a question about which of the latter would be preferable since we can't do both.
Either tour is 12 hours ($171 adult; $110 child) and includes the above plus a hotel lunch and some shopping. I thought our tours were a little expensive but they include a police escort which makes us feel a little more comfortable.
From previous reply. We thought the security was over the top for our shore excursion, but were pleased they cared about our well being. We thought we were in more danger from motorists that travelled the desert highway at night with no lights. Gave up counting how many.
