Default Grand Cayman/Snorkeling on your own?

Hi everyone!!
I'm cruising next week and stopping over in Grand Cayman.
We only have about 6 hours in port. I would like to do my own snorkeling excursion and plan to bring my own equipment. I feel I can get the most out of my day this way. Is it worth it?? How far to stingray city from the tender docks? Also would like to do the reef thing. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!
Ivan

Ivan.
Its about a half an hour boat ride out to Sting Ray City and you do have to tender in Grand Cayman, so do figure that time factor into your day. There should be people that will take you out there, they usually have snorkeling equipment, but like you I'd rather use my own. Just make sure you have enough time to get there and back, thats one good thing about doing a ship excersion, they know you are out and when you get back. Be sure to pick up an underwater camera before you leave home, they are about twice as much once you get there, have fun.

Ivan,
Donna is correct that unless you get a guide with a boat you are not going to StingRay City. You can just walk about 300' to the right of the tender docks to Edans Rock and Devils Grotto where the snorkeling and diving is wonderful. Bring a small bag of cereal with you and be prepared to be mobbed by fish!

Choices, not using the ship excursions, include using Capt Marvin for a combined stingray and snorkel trip and walking to Eden Rock dive center and snorkeling fron shore there.

Capt M does the same trip (but better) as the ship for $34. Leaves from their downtown office at 1:30, back at 4:00. Office is in bldg just past Hard Rock, to the right from dock.

Eden Rock is 10 min walk, to the south. Continue past Hard Rock. No beach there, enter water from stairs. Snorkel equip rental for $11.

That sounds interesting! What kind of cereal is best?

snorkling for first time. Is it better to go with excursion or go on our own. I think I would feel better about going with a group
