Default ferries to St. John and Biolum. kayak excursion

Have a couple of questions about 2 separate ports:

First, is it worth the hassle to try to get to St. John on our own to rent a jeep and explore a FEW beaches, etc? Or does the cost of ferries, taxis, etc. make this not worth the hassle? Anyone taken the ferry from Charlotte Amalie on St. Thos. to St. John, bypassing having to taxi to Red Hook?

Also, RCI's shore excursion sight is lisiting a bioluminescent kayaking excursion near Fajardo in Puerto Rico for the time our cruise takes place - late March. Since the ship leaves P.R. at 8 p.m. and you need darkness for this type of activity. can this be right? Anyone taken this trip?

Thanks for any info.!

Hello, we have always used the water taxi out of Red Hook with no problems, they are very efficient. I think that it might be better to just "rent a driver " for the day over at St. John's to explore the island and beaches as opposed to renting a jeep.
