Going to Alaska on the Radiance in May for our Honeymoon..We have been on many other cruises but none to Alaska..Mostly just the Carribean and Bahamas..Anyone with any MUST see ideas please help...I know time is limited and we dont want to miss anything .Thanks
We went on a Northbound in August 2001. In Juneau we took a ship's tour--Mendenhall Float Trip. We went up to Mendenhall lake and then rafted down the river--a few rapids, but nothing too intense. It was one of the highlights of our trip (DH, me, and 7-year-old daughter). We really enjoyed the rest of the day in Juneau, shopping and walking around "investigating."
In Ketchikan, went salmon fishing--that was the BEST! We caught 5 salmon and had them smoked and sent home (got them the day after we got home). After fishing, went shopping in Ketchikan--agree with the above--expensive and not that much to see.
In Skagway we did the White Pass Railroad that ended up with gold panning in Liarsville. I know a lot of people enjoy this excursion, but we were soooooo bored. I wouldn't do it again. But, we enjoyed the time we actually spent in Skagway.
We were only in Sitka a short time, so we just went shopping--got some really good buys and happened upon some totem pole carving, so that was interesting.
The trip to Alaska was the best vacation we've ever had. I hope you have a WONDERFUL time! Get ready for amazing scenery and wildlive (we saw bald eagles, bear, Baluga whales, etc.).
You might also want to check the "Destinations" section of the Message Boards under the Alaska section because there's TONS of info there. You might also get more response to your message. We went in 2002 and agree that it depends on what you want to do. We decided that we would do one flightseeing (Taku Lodge out of Skagway on Princess), one kayaking, one float trip, etc. and then went from there. For some reason, the shore excursion board is used mainly by Caribbean cruisers on this site . . . .
