Default western carribean shore excursions

We are sailing on the Carnival Glory 9/11/04 and am requesting information on shore excursions for Costa Maya, Progresso, Belize and Cozumel. We are considering doing our own thing in Costa Maya and Cozumel - any suggestions? In Belize, we have narrowed it down to either the Shark Ray Alley Adventure or the Horseshoe Reef Snorkel, which one would be best? The Chicken Itza Ruins sound interesting in Progresso but is it worth a two hour ride on a bus? Any suggestions for things to do would be appreicated.

Kathy

There really isn't much to do in Costa Maya. There's a lot of shopping, a pool with a swim up bar, and some bars and restaurants. We rented a golf cart @ $15/hr and went to Mahahaul which is a nearby village. They had a very nice beach there and some restaurants and people selling things. The village is very poor and everyone tried to get you to buy something. I found them to be a bit pushy. We hung around for about 2 hours and then went back to the ship. We will be back there in April 2005 and have decided to take a tour this time.

In Cozumel we went to Chankanaab Park. I highly recommend it. They have a great beach that you can snorkel right off of. There are restaurants, bars, beach chairs, shade huts, lockers, bathrooms and showers. This is where the dolphins are and even if you don't do the swim with them you can see them there. They also have a botanical garden and a Mayan ruins replica that's pretty interesting. It's a $10 taxi ride and $12/pp for adults and $6/pp for children to get in.

Hope this helps.

Darcy

Kathy,

We are also sailing on the Glory 9/11! Hope to run into you.

Carnival offers (although because of the glitch on their website, you can't get any shore excursions to Costa Maya to show up) 10 shore excursions, so there *is* stuff to do in Costa Maya. Kohunlich Mayan Ruins; Chacchoben Mayan Ruins; Beach Snorkel Adventure; Coral Reef Boat Sbnorkel; Clear Kayak Adventure; All Terrain & Beach Break Combo; Dune Beach Buggy Adventure; Uvero Boat Blast Adventure and Snorkel; and Jungle Beach Break. I also read some pretty fun things in Fodor's about Costa Maya.

My dh, teenage son and I are REALLY looking forward to the cruise. Only 63more days!

dorothy

Regarding Costa Maya, there is much to do. About 2 miles from the pier, at the little fishing village of Mahahual there are wave runners, parasailing, snorkeling, and wonderful, safe places to eat and drink. It is so safe and the people are so friendly. At the actual pier there is a mall that offers shopping etc... and a saltwater pool. The beaches at Mahahual are white sandy pieces of paradise,as are the other beaches nearby such as Uvero Beach. There are vendors that come down from Cancun on "ship days" to sell their things but if you look past them a little, then you will see how Mexico was 60 or 70 years ago. Yes, there are cash-poor people but they are very rich with the lives they lead, and happy. Talk about a great way to lower blood pressure. Rather wanting watersports or just relaxation there really is something for everyone at this port and "the little fishing village."

Greetings from Vancouver, Canada. We will be sailing on Glory on 28/08.
This is what we are planning to do, apppreciate your comments:

This is what we are planning to do:

Cozumel - on our own, take a taxi to chankanaab park . My two teenages did snorkel once and loved it. Questions:

#1: We have the gears except fins, can we rent the fins and safety jacket at the parK
#2 Can we bring the towels from the ship and use in the park? If not, is towel rental available in the park?

Belize - Can't decide cave tubing or Myan ruin. Is cave tubing safe for someone can't swim? What is the best Myan ruin to tour in Belize? Please recmoomned a tour company for Myan ruin.

We will do only one Myan ruin, either in Belize or Progeso.

Progeso - Thinking to go Chichen Itza, I can go with ship exursion but may be more expensive, anyone how much is the ship charge? Any suggestion for relialbe company if we do on our own to Chichen Itza?

Gigi

Most ships allow you to take towels from the ships. just bring them back as they will charge you $20 per towel missing.

We did Snuba in Cozumel through snubacozumel.com. They have a desk at Chak. Park but also have a desk at the Cozumel Hotel and Resort. No crowd and helpful guides. Snuba is a kick.

We then went to Paradise Beach Club. A great place. Reviews on other threads on this board. Buy drinks/food and you can stay and play for free. Free snorkel, kayaks, water trampoline, floating rafts, beach chairs and umbrellas. Snorkelling isn't overwhelming as you are on a sand beach, though. Rent jet skiis next door.

just did cave tubing last week in Belize. Safe. You wear a life vest and sit in an innertube. My son (11) and I had a hard time navigating the currents so a nice young man pulled us for some of the journey. We did not fall out of tube or need to swim at all. It isn't a "lazy river" kind of ride, more adventurous than that, but quite fun!
