My husband and I will be taking our first cruies in April, on the Golden Princess. Does anyone have suggestions on excursions in the Southern Caribbean? We've been doing a lot of research but there are so many choices and I haven't been able to find a good site with reviews of shore excursions. Any suggestions would be helpful.
(we are visiting Antigua, St Lucia, Barbados, St Thomas and St Martin)
Also, if you had a bad experience on an excursion please let us know so we know what to avoid.
so much depends upon what you and your hubby like to do. Did you go to the Princess web site, and look around at the shore excursions that they offer just to get an idea of what might interest you?
St. Maarten - we did the Golden Eagle Catamaran Out-sail - great time, you sail on this beautiful catamaran along the coast - beautiful, sail over to this little island that is a natural preserve where you can swim, relax on the beach or do a little snorkeling. They serve beer, soda & rum punch on the island and champagne on the boat on the sail back. We had a blast doing this.
There is also some really good snorkeling in St. Maarten over on Pineal Island.
Another really fun excursion in St.Maarten is the America's Cup Regatta - you get to sail an actual cup sailboat in an actual race, such a blast. Of course their are great beaches and great shopping on this island.
St. Thomas/St.John- gorgeous islands with beautiful white silky sand, turquoise waters and good snorkeing on St. John Island ( short water taxi ride from St. Thomas), shopping of course in St. Thomas. (we found the shopping better in St. Maarten, however)
In Antigua: I highly recommend that you privately arrange a tour with Lawrence of Antigua. We went with him last Feb and it was one of the highlights of our cruise. He has a spotless air-conditioned van and will arrange a tour to suit your tastes. We did a tour that included the National Historic park (Nelson's Dockyard, Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre (great views, audio visual presentation and a guided tour), Shirley Heights (more great views, the Blockhouse (even more great views) - you pay a $5 entry fee to the Park and save your ticket - all sites are included for one fee). Lawrence never rushes you and makes sure you get the best experience at each site (like making sure you get into the audio-visual presentation at Shirley Heights and on the (included in your park fee) guided tour at Nelson's Dockyard. Then he took us to the Natural Bridge and finally (as per our request) he dropped us at a beach and picked us up at an agreed upon time for our return to the ship. His website is: www.lawrenceofantigua
St. Lucia: a catamaran sail to the Pitons is very pleasant and the view of the Pitons from the ocean is great
St. Martin: We have been there a couple of times and usuallyjust go to Orient Beach - easy to do - there is a taxi stand right at the dock.
St. Thomas: nice beaches - We have been to Magen's Bay (very pretty) and Coki Beach (not as pretty as Magen's but there is decent snorkeling at Coki).
