Dear Joann:

There are many factors to consider:

Is this your first cruise?

How many people will be going on the excursions with you?

What is your comfort level about getting back to the ship before she sails?

If this was my first cruise and my first time to a particular island, I would book my excursion through the cruiseline. I would mainly do this because the excursions are "tried and true" and they will make sure to return you to your ship before it sails.

I certainly wouldn't hesitate to browse the shops near the pier in port on your own.

I hope this helps.
