Now that we know where it is, can someone tell me how to pronounce Chankanaab? Is it Chan' kan ab? Chank' an nab? Chan ka' nob? Chan' ka nahb?

I've seen it written hundreds of times, but never heard anyone pronounce it

Fern - not sure what the right answer is - all I really know is it is beautiful. So many things to see - flora, fauna, beaches, dolphins. What we liked most (after the Dolphin encounter of course) was just walking all through it. There are so many different areas to stroll through and tons of lizards that can't wait for a photo op - they should have little tin cups in front of them to drop money in.

Great place - don't miss it - even if you don't book through the ship's excursions - you can just hop in a cab and pay the "park entry fee". Plenty of eating options as well.

Hi Jennifer,

Well, we're planning on going there, no matter what the pronunciation! Just hope the cab driver knows what we mean

Also, we hope it's still there after Wilma goes through .

It is so sad. From what I have read, the park is gone. Hurricane Wilma devastated the island.

Cozumel....but with Hurricane Wilma....I don't believe the cruise ships can dock at all because the docks were destroyed.

It is pronounced "Chunk-ka-caknob" I hope we can soon return again someday. It's such a beautiful island with wonderful people. I feel so sorry for the people of Cozumel. They didn't deserve this!
Cozumel will once again rise up. I consider Cozumel to be the jewel of the Yucatan Peninsula. Think of the Yucatan as the hand and the island of Cozumel as the diamond.

Thanks, Tunaboat!

We're supposed to be in Cozumel in December. I'll be very happy if we get there, even by tender. I'd love to "contribute" to the economy!

Could anyone tell me if the snorkelling here will be suitable for a first time snorkeler to learn. Is the water extremely deep and do they provide life vests if needed. I am extremely comfortable in the water and I am a good swimmer but I just haven't spent alot of time in the sea so it is an unknown for me. Also, if one takes a taxi there do you arrange a time for pick up with this same taxi, or will there be ample taxis at the park to make our way back to the dock? Thanks for any help.

Barb, according to a link I am going to post here (from cruisecritic) the park isn't supposed to open till Dec. 20.

I don't know about how it will be for walking in to snorkel. It has been a long time since we were there. (It is the first place I ever snorkeled!) Check out the beginning of the thread for more info.

A good alternative would be to go to Paradise Beach. The snorkeling at the end of the pier is supposed to be okay, but who knows, after this hurricane.

Have fun snorkeling!

Thank you Sheffie, I had a look at the other thread. We are not going to be there until Jan 23rd so things should be operational by then. I am looking into Paradise Beach, thank you for the suggestion. We were not intending in doing the Dolphin swim but it would have been nice to see them from the sidelines. Oh well, I am still looking at options. My main goal was to find a good spot to learn to Snorkel, my DH will show me but I didn't want the pressure of a snorkeling excursion or the time limitations just somewhere He and I could go offshore.

BTW I love your Mark Twain quote!

It is in Cozumel, but is was destroyed during one of last years hurricanes. We were just there last week - passed right by it on our way to Playa Mia - which I would highly recommend. We paid about $15 for the taxi and then $12 a person to get in. Included beach chair, umbrella, paddle boats, water trampline, climbing iceberg, kayaks, catamaran, pool, underwater recreated mayan ruins for snorkeling, small zoo area, kids area, and shopping area. For more $ you can get drinks & food included. We were with friends who booked it through the ship - they spent a fortune - we didn't.

Hi there,

Yes, unfortunately Chankanaab is not open yet, it got hit hard be hurricane Wilma in Oct last year. Alternative is either Xcaret on the mainland or one of the beach clubs with plenty of activities. Playa Mia is ok, but i suggest San Francisco...no COVER charge!! it is free...have a look at my site for more info or send me a mail.

Cheers
