I sometimes talk to myself so I'll just answer for my self here.
This sounds like a great trip. Having been through the canal aboard ship, the R.R. sounds like a great ride to the other side and back.
I have taken that excursion. If you are into classic trains and want to get a look at the canal from the outside then the train is ok. I do like old trains but frankly I wouldn't not do the excursion a second time.
The train travels at a high rate of speed and you really don't get a good view of the canal. The bus tour of the Canal Zone that is at the end of the tour is fair at best. You do get to see the Mira Flores locks at the Pacific side of the Canal and have time for some souvenir shopping.
I would opt for the Ocean to Ocean tour in which you take the boat from one end of the Canal to the other. If you are into the Canal this is the tour to go on. IMO
Take care,
Mike

Mike, thanks for the info. there are two tours advertised. One is apparently in a regular type car and the other is in a domed car with a/c. There is quite a bit of difference between the prices. I am guessing they are actually on the same train, with just different cars. I am almost certain I saw something sometime back posted about this but maybe I am wrong. Thanks again.
I have taken the train through the Panama Canal and had a great time. We did sit in the dome car and I do believe it makes a difference in the view of the canal as you are sitting up higher. I would recommend this tour to anyone. The car seemed to have been refurbished and was very comfortable. :D
It sounds like a great trip. Since I have been through the 1st sets of locks. I thought maybe this would be a great way to see the other side of the oceans. I will be traveling with my 79 years old mother, so this might be an easier tour to take. 8)
