We will be travelling on Liberty of the Seas with a stop at St. Marten. What beaches would you recommend and why? Travelling with Hubby and 15 year old son. Would like to shop for part of the day and then go to the beach. Any advise greatly appreciated!

Don't know when you're sailing, but I would suggest you flip-flop your plans and hit the beach in the morning and shop in the afternoon. I live in Florida and the Caribbean has the same type of weather....the morning and early afternoon is the best time to go to the beach or go diving during the rainy season (June-October). We get storms almost every afternoon which can put a damper on beach plans. When we go on shore excursions, we always book the earliest one...better snorkeling, swimming and less chance our excursion will be cancelled or ruined due to the weather.
In St. Maarten, we LOVE Orient Beach. Be advised that parts of the beach are clothing optional. I took my 16 year old grandson and he was so absorbed in the water activities, he didn't even notice the few nudists here and there. Believe me, the people that are topless should be ashamed to bare it all on the beach, blah. But, the beach is beautiful and they have lots of water activities...banana boat rides, parasailing, etc. Also, restaurants and bars and changing facilities.
I have to agree with Rose, get to Orient beach first thing, and then do some shopping in town later. You can easily get a cab to the beach and there are plenty to take you back to the pier area.
You can jet ski, parasail and they have banana boat rides and plenty of lounge chairs, restaurants/bars, etc.
Hi Flipperfan,
Sure you can snorkel there, but not much to see, coral, fish, etc. I've never seen anyone snorkeling there, just a large beautiful beach.

We are just off the Mariner and did a fabulous tour with SXM Tours, It was a six hour tour with stops for shopping and at Orient beach, my kids enjoyed the beach part and didn't want to leave. You can look up www.sxmtours.com. Our tour guide Bernard was very informative and you couldn't beat the price
my favorite is orient beach. Its a good time to explain to your son about different cultures and I think it would be great to experience this with him. Trust me, there are many folks there that I'd rather NOT see naked but we must take the bad with the good.
