Default Gold Panning excursion in Juneau, Alaska

Hi,

We've finally got round to booking our shore excursions with RCCL and find that we can't do the gold panning trip my mother in law really wants to do as the only times available conflict with another excursion we've booked.

Does anyone know/can recommend a company in Juneau that offers this kind of trip?

Thanks in advance

Andrio

Andrio,
The only time I've seen gold panning in Alaska ports was on the combo train and bus in Skagway. The thing is that these are always so far from the real thing that it is rather pathetic, IMHO. When younger, DH and I did real panning for gold in California. Tourist version is not exactly what you might expect. It is cool to see what gold looks like in its natural state...it looks like the gold in a piece of jewely! Somehow, I expected it to be like gem stones, which are embedded in rock and have to be cut and polished.
Anyway, I would try to google for a compnay that does this. I've never seen it on a ship's tour.

Thanks Marty,

My MIL really has her heart set on doing some gold panning so we'll see what we can find by googling. Thanks for your advice.

BTDT. Google for operators. BTW, flies were thick on the river.

Hmmmm, never thought about flies but we're there in September so it might be too cold for them?

Have found a company called Goldbelt and am waiting for them to e-mail me some details.

Nope, September is no way close to being too cold for flies...and mosquitoes. Take bug repellant. It may be rainy, so also take light weight raingear...poncho's rather than umbrellas.
Have fun!

Just come visit us up in the Sacramento area. Head up to Auburn or Coloma we have the real thing here. Colorcrazie is that were you panned for Gold? Shoot, my uncle use to own a gold mining supply store.
Check out the Gold Gallery: http://www.pioneermining.com/album_gold_.htm
The white stuff is quartz. Gold likes to hang out in quartz so once you have found quartz you are doing good. Here is some information about California gold mining the techinques should apply to Alaska. http://www.goldfeverprospecting.com/gopainsoandn.html

We lived in L.A. DH had fantasy about panning for gold, so his birthday present one year was a weekend class and field trip given by a local mining company. That also gave us the rights to pan on the mining companies property whenever we wanted. Which surprised me, except that there wasn't much gold to be found. Still had a lot of fun weekends there, though.
Loved the pic with quartz!

We've found a few companies on the internet (the one I mentioned above never got back to me) but they all have tours starting at 1pm lasting one and a half hours - we leave Juneau at 3pm so it's cutting it too fine for my liking.

Oh well, maybe next time.

Thanks for the advice guys
