Default ship excursions versus going it alone, Sint Maarten

For Sint Maarten, since the main attractions are beaches, would it be better to go it alone or book an excursion through the ship? I might do a tour of the two sides in the morning either way.

Need some cruise help?

Last time there we took a taxi to sunset beach on the other side from the ship.

Traffic can get kind of bad and we had to leave plenty of time to get back. Wasnt a cheap ride either.

Watching the planes swoop in about 50 ft above the beach was worth it though.

Upon arrival at St Maarten, you can rent a car - very inexpensively - right at the pier. The driving was extremely easy, the roads were lovely and we were able to stop all along the way as we wished. Do allow extra time for your return - we ran into some traffic on the way back. I would definitely recommend a car rental versus an excursion, you have much more freedom.
