We did that on our first time in Puerto Rico and really enjoyed it. Depending on the time of year part of the ride to get there can be very warm as the buses that are used have to turn off the ac when going up the mountain. But that is the only negative and definitely not a reason not to do it. We got some beautiful photos in the forest. And we did have time to look around old San Juan after, of course this depends on what time your ship leaves port.

However, there are soooo many other interesting things to do in Puerto Rico that I don't know if I would recommend it for you one and only San Juan experience. The old city and the great fort are extremely interesting also.
Thank you all for the information and sharing your photos! I did see the forts last time I was in Puerto Rico our ship is there in the day and we have enough time to see the Rainforest. It's offered as a tour just for our singles group not the entire ship with Carnival so I think I will do it.

Yes, the rainforests and the caves are beautiful there. And if you are there are night, the whistling you here is a frog named a Coqui, not a bird like it sounds. And try to get some homemade mofongo somewhere. YUM!
