Trying to figure out the best approach for going to St. John from St. Thomas.
DIY: Take cab to Red Hook, take ferry to St. John, take cab to destination - reverse process on the way back.
Plus: cheaper, can go where/when you want
Minus: Have to wait for ferries at each end, have to be more "time aware", run the gauntlet at Havensight (twice)
ShoreX: Meet a boat at the dock and taken point to point
Plus: greater convenience
Minus: more expensive, time restricted - you go where they go
I tend towards the DIY this will be our first time to St. John so we will probably go to Trunk Bay which is also very do-able as a ShoreX.
Is there much to do in Red Hook while we wait for the ferry?

do it yourself, it is easy, we have done it many times, all it takes is a little time management planning. The ferries leave every hour on the hour from Red Hook, wait a bit for the first rush of passengers who absolutely, positively must be the first ones off the ship
Just out of interest our ship-trip met us at Havensight off the ship, as the weather was so bad we got to St.John & came straight back but the ferry went to the other terminal at Charlotte Amalie, do they also go from there, seems nearer than Red hook.
