Default bamboo rafting down the Martha Brae River

DH and I will be in Falmouth Jamaica in January and are really interested in taking a Bamboo Raft down the Martha Brae River. My question is...should we chance going it alone (meaning hire a cab to take us to the Rafter's Village and hope we can get back) OR book the excursion prior to the cruise via the cruise line or one of these online tour companies OR book when we arrive through a local tour operator (and are there any suggestions on which one is more reputable?)? Any guidance would be much appreciated as this will be our first cruise in over ten years and our first time to the Western Caribbean.

It all depends, if the time frame is close, I would just book with the cruiseline, so no chance of missing the ship? How far away is the excursion from the pier?

They said it is 3 miles from the pier. We have 7 hours in port. I haven't been able to find a whole lot online about other's experiences on getting to the excursion, but maybe I'm not looking in the right places.

It appears that it is 3 miles from the port/pier and we are in port for 7 hours. I have been trying to find information online, but have not had that much success on how people have booked it or their experiences on going it on their own.
