Default How to Current Promotions Compare to Previous Promotions

All the cruise companies seem to be offering some sort of promotion at the moment (eyeing Alaska), most run from Dec 1 - Feb 29. Are these promotions normal? Are these promotions any better or worse than what you've seen before? Expect anything better to come along March 1?

Cruise Lines are always running promotions. As for whether it's a good time to book or not, I always tell my clients to book as early as possible because right now may be the best rates that will be offered. If you book now and the rates go down, your agent can usually get your price reduced as long as final payment has not yet been made. If the prices go up, you're protected against any increase. Plus, if you book now, you have your choice of good cabin location, whereas if you wait, the cabin you wanted may no longer be available. This is especially important if you need something other than a standard double cabin, such as when traveling with children and you need a triple or quad cabin, or two cabins next to each other, etc.

Also, keep in mind that an advertised special may not be the best deal. For example, I had two couples wanting to book on Celebrity. They're offering a particular rate that includes the complimentary beverage package. However, my clients don't drink, so I got them a much better rate without the beverage package - they didn't even know they could book it without the package because it's not advertised as such.

Remember, as your mother told you, you don't get something for nothing. Sometimes the best deal is not the best price and vice versa. As an example, it's important to let your agent know whether you drink alcohol or not and how much you drink. They're not going to judge you and they're not trying to intrude on your privacy, but it can help them find the best deal for you given your specific needs. While a complimentary beverage package sounds enticing, it may or may not be the best price.

In the last few years "Cruise Specials" have become like mattress store sales. There is always one going on.

The truth is that there always "numerous" specials and discounts being offered. No one pays "sticker price".

The best advice is to contact a cruise specialist who can wade through the myriad of pricing and find the best for you. Remember, the rock bottom price isn't always the best deal. They often come with a number of hooks and penalties for cancellation or changes.

My opinion is that if you don't cruise more than once or twice a year it is best to book as far out as you can and if the rates change a cruise specialist can get you that rate. Remember that it is up to you to see if the rates change. The agent will change it if you contact them but the days when an agent tracks everyone of their bookings and looks for changes is long gone. If the agent has a smaller amount of bookings they may do this but I personally wouldn't use them because they have less clout with the cruise line in the event a problem occurs.

I hope you find your perfect cruise at a good price.

Take care,
