A Curious New Charge For Service on Silversea?
 
I was reading another website and saw that Silversea (at least on the Silver Spirit) is apparently offering soft porn movies...and is charging $18.00 for it.

If true, I am not so concerned about the type of movie, but the fact that Silversea is charging for it.

When does the finding ways to charge (extra cost dining, extra cost saki, extra cost unrequested charity donations, etc.) begin to degrade the product of Silversea?

Does it actually matter to you? I mean do you like the Silversea cruise product so much that these extras really don't bother you?

The Silversea product is a good one,that I have no doubt about.
Offering adult movies is just the same as what a lot of Hotels offer so it is there if you want to spend your money on it and you leave it if you do not want to spend your money.I suppose it is like the wine list you partake or you do not.
If Silversea is looking to create more revenue why don't they turn Le Champagne into a lap dancing bar,they will finally make money with this under frequented space.

I think they would then need a bigger onboard hospital, to cope with the extra amounts of heart attacks!! :(then again....probably the adult movies would create a few heart attacks anyway!

How much is a doctor's visit for the vy-aggra (who knew our censor filter blanks out ******)? :rolleyes:

I agree its not a big deal. I am sure a lot of cruise lines offer this kind of movie. I do remember it was part of the Celebrity deal with Sony back in 1995. And plenty of hotels do it.

The only thing shocking about it is the price! It would be cheaper to go online for an hour.

For that matter, if you really like such a thing then put it on your computer before you go - its, cheaper, easier and more private.

I am sure the cost of installing such PPV equipment was not cheap for Silversea. I just hope it is worth it to them.

Unfortunately, as I have previously written on my blog, Silversea is IMHO making the mistake of offering some innovative and/or alternative options, but is using them to find ways around the all inclusive nature of its product...and then really charging you big time.

I do not believe charging a fee for a restaurant is good logic - on a luxury line - to limit demand. The finest restaurants in the world do it by way of a thing called "reservations".

I do not believe charging for sake that is not at the level of JW Green or Blue is appropriate.

I do not believe charging for movies - blue or otherwise - is appropriate.

What is happening is that the exclusivity of Silversea is being undercut...which results in the premium people are willing to be paid to be undercut...which makes the demand reduce (or is that the prices, or the service or the cuisine...)

Eric - I do see your point. All the cruise lines use the same excuse, that they charge to limit demand.

But let's be honest - what Silversea does with its Le Chapagne is a very unusual offering (and I have actually never seen it in action).

I am sure what they do is not just about profit - we are talking about some very expensive and exclusive wine pairings. They couldn't do what they are offering at no additional cost.

Even the new Oceania Marina - which has almost no extra service charges for specialty dining, has the new restaurant Privee where they charge $1000 per night (for 8 people).

It isn't $1000 of pure profit - it takes a lot of work and product for them to offer that kind of special experience.

It's for the people who want that kind of thing. It's the Rolls Royce of specialty dinners - while most of the people are driving Mercedes.

It isn't my place to knock something just because I can't afford it. I'm not into the "class warfare" thing ;-)

Le Champagne has two offerings: $30 charge and the $200 charge with the reserve wines. I have no problem with the $200 charge because, as you point out, there are some very select wines offered. Not sure the $200 is proportional to the wines, but I don't think it needs to be.

Oceania Marina does have an exclusive evening which, I think, will actually be a more exclusive experience. But while Oceania doesn't market itself as inclusive, there are things that even when inclusive extra charges...even significant ones...are justified.

As another example, I have a group on the Celebrity Century next month and the group has bought out Murano for the evening. There is a fee for the restaurant and a guarantee on the liquor/wine purchases.

Yes, exclusivity has its justifiable price...but I guess the question for everyone is..."What is it you think is a justified additional charge and what isn't on Silversea":?:

Good question...

This is why I wrote that article about cruise connoisseurs.

To determine what is a justifed cost on an all-inclusive luxury line is a full-time job because some things are included and some are extra cost.

My intuition, although I have never tried Le Champagne, is that the whole point is the wine pairings, and so I would not do it for $30 for the food only. I have heard people say they did that and it was not worth it. The food is not the same without the wine - that is the whole point.

So, look at it this way. If Silversea could do the same thing but with less expensive wines would it be the same experience? Would the pairings be as special? Would they be able to assure the same level of service?

If you are going to do something very special - as this is intended to be, they should do it "right." And I think that is the basic philosophy of Silversea - that they want to do luxury right.

I can go to a "wine tasting" on Celebrity and try different types of wine and learn a little bit about what foods go with what wines, but to have "the best wine pairing dinner possible" is something I would expect from Silversea.

So, no, I don't really see it as degrading the product. I respect Silversea a lot and I think they usually do the best they can for their customers. I know they sometimes fall short, but I don't fault the company policy for it. Sometimes the staff just doesn't get the word.

You take a luxury line to experience the luxury. Yeah, they will have their problems, but the experience is what you make it. If you focus on the bad you are only wasting your own precious time on the cruise.

Now don't get me wrong. I have been on plenty of cruises where someone is having a bad time and spends the entire cruise nitpicking the cruise line. I feel sorry for those people as they usually end up wasting their entire vacation looking at everything that is wrong.

I married her because of the way she treated her dad - she always made sure he had dinner. Now, I realize I should have married a girl who made enough money that she could afford a cook.

Oh well, that's life.

BTW: I keep my wife in a far better life than she was accutomed to. She even has a pet Pappillon, after all. (She is one of those wives... just got back from the beauty parlor where both she and her puppy had their nails done).

I fear responding to any other aspect of this part of the thread other than to note that if it is fried, Scots will eat it. (fish, potatoes, candy bars, sheep stomach filled with oats and butcher shop droppings...it really doesn't matter.)

I think I remember you from posting about the Mariner of the Seas when it went around the horn. We picked her up in LA and it was her first cruise out of LA down the Mexican Riviera. That was the first time my checked luggage was held by security. When I went to check on it, I was told that it might have an iron in it. Apparently they ran it through x-ray.Well they saw the bottle of Gin I’m sure and wanted to get it out. Well, I made such a fuss they checked which cabin I was in and let it go. I heard one fellow say: “Oh, just take the booze and give me my clothes”
On the Le Champagne room on Silversea. We did that and I thought it was going to be like the Millennium class ships, but it was a fixed menu and drinks. I did not like the menu nor the champagne. I really like spumante better. We are scheduled on the Silver Shadow but I will check on the menu first in the Le Champagne room if they have one. I don’t like raw duck. I can eat kibbe, but the raw duck just didn’t appeal to me.
The Silver Whisper lived up to their promise of free booze, and good gin and drinks, but their complimentary wine selections were not so good to my taste. Maybe I just like cheap wines. I will drink beer at dinner on the Silver Shadow. The service is spectacular. The food was excellent.
I’m not sure it is worth the higher cost.
I did the fly out of Punta Arenas to King George Island for the Antartica cruise. I think I remember $9000/p . Of course I had to get myself to Punta Arenas.

Thanks Joe - Great pictures. It looks cold, but I wonder if it was as cold as our trip to Svalbard at 80 degrees north.

I have found that "complimentary" wine drinking gets bit old after a few nights. I prefer beer - it doesn't give you such a headache.

Champagne will give me aciud reflux worse than anything I can think of - almost instantly - then the sugar just makes me want to go to sleep.
