Why are there more single women on cruises?
Hi everyone,
Just wondering why it seems that there are more single women on cruises-men must love this!

Whiteknight June 25th, 2005 07:17 PM

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
We do love it! There are several reasons why there's more single women on cruises than there are men. As a general rule women outlive men. Also, most men squeak when they walk and aren't too thrilled about spending $$$ without a guarantee of fun with the ladies. Most men are too interested in sporting events to waste time on cruising. Most men would rather spend time at the local bars, men's clubs, etc. for a lot less money then cruising. Most men would rather sit in front of the tube with a beer than maybe have to dance or risk getting any exercise. In short, women like to have fun and experience new adventures. Men, as a rule, are lazy and just want to have sex without the effort. Now there are exceptions and I'm one of them. I'm one of two guys in my local Jazzercise class of 50 women. I'm one of a handful of guys, in my age group, who spends hours riding bikes, jogging and working out at the gym. So there are a few of us in my age group that enjoy cruising, (I'm 54) who aren't gay and love the ladies, who can still see our toes, much less touch them without bending our knees, but we're few and far between. I hope that answered your question.

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
That's baloney. The reason there are more women on cruises than men is because men will most always invite a woman to go with him. How many women will invite and pay for a man?

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
Well that's an interesting take on it. I've been on about 10 single's cruises and I've yet to meet a man who brought a woman with him. I've met guys who came with other friends, but they were always guys and I've met women who came with other friends, but they were always women. I have met groups of people made up of men and women, but none of them seemed to be attacted to one another. But what the hell do I know. I've only been cruising with single's groups for about 5 years. Of course before that, when I was married, I cruised for about 10 years with my wife and we always seemed to wind up with more women than men at out table and they always told us the same story. All their male friends had better things to do than waste time and money cruising. I think the fact that you discarded every one of my suggestions as irrelevant pretty well speaks for itself. I think it's been documented that women outlive men as a rule and therefore, it's safe to assume the ratio of men to women on cruises would be the same as in the general population. But believe whatever you want.

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
Men are spending their money on big screen TVs and strippers and have nothing left for vacations.

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
Women out live men and thus in the older age group there are more women than men alive and thus more women than men in all places including cruises.

Women being on average the physically weaker sex are more concerned with security and safety then men. A cruise is safer than say renting a car and going to unknown places. With a cruise everything is right on the ship and one actually doesnt need to leave the ship at all. Even in port it is possible to take an excursion or taxi right from the ship (though excursions from the cruise line tend to me more expensive then the same activity not through the cruise line).

Though times are changing it is still more common for the husband to work but the wife not to work then the other way around, thus a wife is free to go on a mid week cruise with the children while the husband works.

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
An interesting question with thought-provoking responses.

Personally, I think women prefer cruising, because, everything considered, it is a safe way for them to vacation. Men, on the other hand, can take off on their own with little worries.

Then there is the matter of interests according to gender. A friend of mine just returned from a two-week motorcycle road trip from south Florida all the way to New Hampshire. It was a guy thing. Now how many times have you seen a group of just gals take off on motorcycles to travel hundreds of miles? Cruising is great for women traveling alone, but the more men the merrier, right, gals? Either way, it's the perfection vacation.

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
I have to agree with Whiteknight.

Though I don't take Jazzercise but I do take aerobics and it was nice to be among the few men who done classes with women. Anyway, women most over 35 do take cruises because most love the sea air and who doesn't. You will not find many young women under 35 taking a cruise because of money and why go on a cruise to meet men where a local club can do.

Most men who do go on cruises I believe are more open-minded and know what to expect on one. Unlike a small group of men who seen a movie about a cruise expecting to get a quick lay are disappointed.

Greetings Cruisemates

This is a Loaded question for the average land lover. The formention responses are most positive and of course and am speaking from a personal point of view. I know on my first cruise ( 5 under my belt presently) you would have needed a crowbar to wrench 700 dollars from me for a cruise (7 days, my share)

But I would have spent time to get a trip ticket from AAA, money for a rental car, insurance for the rental car, hotel for 7 days, food for the journey... mostly fast food and let's not forget the enterainment...... go figure!!

I have talked to male co-workers until I am red in the face about cruising, checking out the pristine azure/ blue waters, the smell of crisp fresh/salty air but many time to no avail and even showed many, many pictures of people, places .....

So, I believe the rush for men to go cruises will be slow...

Why don't women wear socks?

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
i have been watching this thread just chomping at the bit to throw in my 2 cents worth!...
i think its nothing more than a matter of taste..more men like baseball than women..but still lotsa women like baseball..more women like dancing than men...but a lot of men still like to dance..inevitably no 2 things are equal and there may be no reason other than chance that one sex prefers cruising over the other..but in this case i think its just that more women on the whole prefer a relaxed worry free vacation than are more likely to prefer a vacation that involves challenging physical activities..

to the guy who said its due to women outliving men...i dont think that would be a factor until you compared the populations at the typical age of death..yes there are substantially more women at 75 than men..but is the same true at 40?..and i think the typical cruising age is not up there in the 75s

anyway..i love to dance and i have never been on a cruise by myself so if this thread is true..i cant wait to meet some gals on my trip in october!

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
I'm going to join the category of Rodnarf, Sir Duke and Whiteknight. I work out daily, stay in good shape, love to cruise, enjoy meeting others with similar interests and have no expectations except having a great time. Fortunately, I can do this with or without accomplices. I don't think many men fit this category.

Pat: I think we have a good group going here. Maybe if you combined us with the 50s Ladies group, we could fill one deck. For your planning purposes, I am not available in September. I'm doing a med cruise (solo). I also want to do South America in January.

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
Here is my take from the female view point. Women grew up watching the Love Boat on tv and some still secretly hope to meet Mr. Right on a boat not Mr. Right Now, which is who they usually meet instead. Women are romantic, and we enjoy men in uniform also, (the staff). Men don't want to room with a strange man (homophobes this means you!) women are more willing to take that chance. Crusing provides good service, pampering spa services, shopping, sight seeing, dancing, music and shows, most women enjoy this stuff so do some men, did I mention shopping.

Guys like cheap drinks, sports etc... Not all but most. Guys don't think wow lets go on a cruise, they think lets go to Vegas and hit the casino and strip clubs.

Guys spread the word to each other this is a great way to travel and maybe meet a lady or two. If no romance I still think you will have a good time, and at least make friends, but go with an open mind and no expectations. If you want instant gratification for a cheaper price tag go to a strip club like Ferret says :)

Hi everyone,
I was the person who originally asked the question. Wow - what an outcome! It's great to hear others' opinions. I'm 31, professional female, and travel solo most of the time. I've just noticed that so many of my cruises had more females. Thanks to all for your input :)

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
well, I just got back from another singles cruise. I can't believe how skewed it was. I think it was at least 75% women.

They posted pictures on the website. July 4th....check it out....kind of funny, really.

Beetlegator July 11th, 2005 07:57 AM

Unless the ship is full of bikini clad blondes (or burnettes or red-heads for that matter) I don't think they will rush out to buy a cruise.

I have seen the posted pics and there are alot of attractive women on that ship.

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
I have been on 12 cruises. The first 3 with my wife and the last 9 as a single. Sometimes I take my kids and sometimes I go by myself. I am 40, stay in shape, have abs, a tan and all my teeth and no tattoos. I always manage to meet some single ladies. Sometimes single moms with their kid(s) and sometimes single girls in a group. I rarely find two guys traveling together. I would not take a buddy on a cruise with me. First, he will cramp my style. I always do better as a lone wolf. I need the cabin to myself for entertaining.

I think girls are more likely to go on a cruise with their friends where when guys cruise, it is with their wife and/or family. So the odds are in my favor and I like that. In fact, I have one coming up and was thinking about bringing a lady friend and now think I won't and take my chances.

Dave the wave, you made my day. I too will be in lone wolf status for my first cruise on the triumph Dec 10th. I hope to meet some single women. Greg

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
You will Greg. My last Carnival cruise I made the mistake of hooking up the first night with a girl in the piano bar late. I had my beer goggles on. The next day, I saw better prospects and the ship was getting smaller. Please learn from my mistake.

Dave the Wave July 20th, 2005 10:27 AM

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
Sir Duke,

Just to clarify something. I say Lone Wolf as in I don't need to have a friend or someone else to help me meet ladies. If I don't have my boys with me, (Adventure Ocean is great for keeping them occupied) I will take a cabin by myself. I don't want or need a room mate. I only hope to meet one nice one early on and spend some fun times together for the duration. I don't need more than one per cruise. That creates bad feelings and one never knows how crazy someone can get. I don't want to end up overboard.

Re: Why are there more single women on cruises?
Just my opinion here...

I think men are able to impress each other by having a lady on hand (the more attractive the lady, the more impressed the other men are.)

Women aren't able to do that as easily. We impress each other with clothes, hair styles, body type, etc. We don't need a man with us to impress other women, so we are more willing to cruise alone because it is more the cruise itself that defines us, not our cruise companion (or lack of one.)
