Advice needed - What to do with items on the beach

If you go to the beach alone, do you leave your personal items unattended to go in the water? If not, what do you do with them? Also, what type of waterproof item can be used to store your money, ship card etc. (anything you can't have lost or stolen) while you're in the water? Although I go to the beach every opportunity I get (I live in the desert, so the beach is a 6 hour drive), last year's cruise stop in St. Thomas was the very first time I ever went into the water. After a little coaxing from a friend, and 2 fruity rum drinks that tasted like strawberry smoothies (I'm a non-drinker), I walked my not so little behind right into that ocean and had the time of my life looking for Jaws. Now all I can think about is heading to the beach and into the water on my cruise in August. But I need all the advice I can get. Oh, did I mention I can't swim.

They sell these little plastic water proof containers on a string you tie around your neck, you can put money in them, some you can even put credit cards in. I think they might have them at sporting good stores or try the departments that sell googles, fins and snorkle masks. Im pretty sure I've seen them in the gift shops on the cruise too. But try Walmart, Wallgreens etc first. I try to bring a bright colored beach towel and stay with in eye shot of my stuff. It's never to late to take a swim class or have a friend try to teach you! Other wise stay close to shore where your feet touch the bottom. Happy cruising!
