O.K. Angel, on my last cruise this is how I ran up a $1,396 sail and sign in 8 days.

Foo-foo's, casino, tips, 1 milk shake, bingo cards.

That is it. I had a coupon for a free picture and that was the only one I ended up taking home. I did not buy any sourvenirs because I found the ship's shops lacking in variety. I purchased liquor at the ports. I already have more jewelry than I can wear. I don't snorkel, scuba, or swim with dolphins. I have been to so many caribbean islands that they are starting to all look alike to me. Therefore, I don't purchase excursions anymore. Rather i just get off the ship and hire a cabbie the drive me around for about an hour and drop me off at the beach.

Therefore, $1,396 went to foo-foo's, slot machines, bingo cards, tips, 1 dinner at Harry's with $10 tip and 1 chocolate milk shake.

Lucky for me, I had $484 in OBC, I won $500 in bingo and had brought just under $400 cash with me. All told at the end of the cruise, I had almost $100 in cash to see me home and the ship placed $105 in charges on my credit card.

And that is how I spend my money. I usually would not gamble so much but I had the OBC and then I won bingo so I figured I was not playing with my money but rather was playing with Carnival's money. Otherwise, I would have limited my gambling to maye $200 for the entire cruise.

Before I go on a single cruise I plan a year in advance to pay for the single cabin. Once that is done, I can concentrate on building up cash for spending and emergencies which is around $600 not including the hotel stay before and after the cruise.

I usually come back home with $400 in my pocket after a 7 day cruise.

That is very discipline of you.

I do the exact opposite. I surf the web until I find a deal that I just can't pass up. I book it using my credit card and then work out a plan on how to pay for it before the date of the cruise. I don't generally carry credit card debt from month to month (there is one card with a balance that I pay slowly to keep my billing paying credit history pristine). When I book the cruise, I give myself 2-3 months to pay it off.

I plan my cruises well in advance. Sometimes up to a year or more. That way, I can put it on layaway. I use my vacation account at my Credit Union for my spending cash. I spend minimal on drinks on a cruise. I spend at least $200-$300 on Spa services for the week. My weakness has always been jewelery. For my 40th bday, I was on a cruise to St Martin and someplace, but I bought myself a $4400 white gold ring with cognac and white diamonds. BUT I paid $3800...WHAT A BARGAIN...lol. Now I think I have all the jewelry I want. But I have gone on 7 day cruises and spent less than $500, not including tipping.

Like you IBCRUSIN, I don't use the credit card, it's debit or do without. CC is for building "pristine" credit. lol

I do however have a larger budget for my 14day cruise. There may be more jewerly and leather in my future.

I look at it this way, aside from the drinks (alcohol and soda) which you have to pay for, the excursions, gifts, games, gambling and the tips everything else is included on the cruise. I do live a little when I am on the ship and buy t-shirts when I am in the ports but I want to have a cushion of money when I come back home. I believe the goal is to pay for the cruise itself, especially if you have a room to yourself.

I have seen cruise guests go through their cruise card by drinking and gambling within the first few days and are bumming off drinks or money from fellow passengers. I don't want to see myself in that position.

Cool. I buy watches aboard every so often for the same reason. When they finally wear out, I'm stuck taking a cruise to replace them. Works for me since I am allergic to diamond rings.

Alas, I am still trying to catch the Rotterdam this year with my best shot being September 6. I'm forced to try to take on Europe, Africa and Asia on a single 12 day cruise or else wait until next year for another transatlantic run from Lisbon to Ft. Lauderdale. Such is life - too many ships, too little time.

As for round shiny objects, I try to stay away from metal rings as the last one left a white mark on my left hand which took days of intensive tanning on the beach to remove. And then there was all the hassle of getting to that beach by ship and procuring the Coronas. However, I can send you an o-ring and a copy of the SSI Diver's Diamond.

See you are also looking to do Europe. Kiddo can't ditch school that long unless I take him out of school then use the grace period to re-enroll him. Technically possible, but not likely. So I may be forced to wander Europe, Asia and Africa solo just to bag 3 continents, 2 seas, and 1 of the seven ancient wonders. Pobrecito mi amiga!

[quote="Angelgal"]WELL...... CRUISER GUY...... You can buy me a small diamond ring since I am NOT ALLERGIC to gold or diamonds on your next cruise. .
When is your next cruise? I don't pay much attention to when someone is cruising? YOU ARE MY BEST FRIEND if you buy me a tiny, tiny diamond ring..... even if I need to look at the diamond through a magnifier.
I do like diamond dust rings too. The point is.... that the diamonds are real even if they are made out of left overs from creating a beautiful diamond. I wear a size 7 ring.. Your best friend, Lucie

P.S. Don't tell me that you are poor and can't afford it or don't really know me or make any other excuses. You look prosperous to me..

Alas diamonds are forever, boyfriends are not. Afraid my severe allergies include diamonds of all kinds, organs, churches, ministers, and even Las Vegas. We poor divers are only into pearls - we tease them out of their shells then string them along.

Kiddo has been home schooled of sorts, since dad is a dive pro, life guard, asistant scoutmaster, merit badge counselor and family historian. Adventurewise, he walks in tall timber as a cousin of adventurers Boone and Roosevelt.

Kiddo is bright, but hates to write or make presentations. His exposure to world cultures and geography is extensive and his identifiable family runs in the millions and circles the globe. He has his Oceanography Merit Badge, PADI Project Aware specialty, and does scientific diving up at Texas State.

No way has this shepherd been left to be turned into a sheep by our public school system. BTW, his great aunt is a retired techer from the Culver City Elementary over in your county.

Have a happy 4th!

Dave

Can you home school your kiddo for one school year? I think that traveling is an education for kids. He can come back and give a report on the Cultures of other countries, geography, oceanography, etc. He most likely will learn more from you than in a school. Your best friend, Lucie

Default Pearls of Wisdom

I must have been a pirate in a previous life as I have a chest full of those pearls of wisdom. 8)

Hmmm. Let's see if I am a poor diver. Worn flip flops, faded Hawaiian shirt, only a palm tree for shelter - yep, I'm either a poor diver or Jimmy Buffet's long lost brother. ROTFL

Keep up the positive thinking, my friend. Miracles happen. I once knew a guy who had severe asthma for 17 years, went through a nasty divorce, lost the asthma, became a dive pro, and now teaches diving to kiddos and scouts.

Saves kittens in his spare time, too, as Jenne can attest.

Dave
