I have cancelled insurance after I paid for it. I purchase through mytripinsurance or whatever the name of that website is and had no problem getting a full refund.
As I have mentioned before one of my close girlfriends claims to want to cruise with me next spring/summer. Since I am insisting on my own cabin, I will (a) not make a reservation until she has made and paid her deposit and (b) keep us in separate cabins in separate bookings so that if she decides to pull out it won't change my vacation.
The one concession I am tentatively making is that we have to wait until her daughter is out of school for the summer and has been shipped off to her dad's out of state. This means that we will be in prime vacation time and the cruise will be a bit higher. I am willing to eat that cost for the sake of my friend going with me. However, if my friend has not made her reservation at least 60-75 days before her kid gets out of school, I will book a cruise for the very end of May which is the last week before the prices really take a jump. I like her but she is a bit flaky and while I would love for her to experience cruising with me, I am not willing to bet my vacation on her dependability. Plus, she is always drowning in bad financial decisions and crying about not being able to pay basic living expenses for one reason or the other.
In short, I am keeping our vacation separate as much as possible.
