Default WARNING!!!! ONLINE CRUISE SPECIALTY COMPANY HAS GONE BUST!!

I received a voicemail from Carnival Cruiseline this afternoon. They informed me that the TA (cruise specialist) that I used to book my 05/09 cruise has gone out of business. Luckily, since this is a Carnival cruise, all I have to do is contact Carnival tomorrow morning so that they can send me some sort of form to sign and they will take over my reservation.

Be forewarned. In this economical climate some of these cruise specialist companies are having a really hard time. This particular cruise agency is one of the major players in the Internet cruise specialty field and they are no more. I don't know if I am allowed to disclose the name but if you want to know, send me a pm and I will tell you which company has gone bust.

If you have a cruise booked through a travel agency (especially if it is a group cruise), it may be a good time to find out from the cruiseline how they would handle something like this. My reservation is for a single cabin. I am not sure how the other cruiselines will handle something like this if this was a group booking. Also, I had only made a down payment thus far, so it is to Carnival's benefit to take care of this situation.

Again, CHECK YOUR TRAVEL AGENCY RESERVATIONS.

Thanks for the heads up, IBCRUZIN.

Was this particular travel agent do single cruises or just general cruises?

The company we booked our cruise with went out of business too (maybe it's the same one). But they already gave our money to Holland America so we're okay. I think it was called CruiseValue.com or something like that. My friend took care of the booking. I just gave my credit card number, so I don't remember the name fo the company. But we've gotten the documents and everything is fine.

ahhh! I know the name. In fact, I know the CEO and his family very well. They made a fortune from this collapse.

What do you mean? Did they make their future by running off with people's final payments? If so, they had better not spend too much of that money because the credit card companies are going to want full refunds for all of those payments.

I don't know the particulars but I would not think that being in the crosshairs of American Express, Visa or Mastercard, and being in the wrong is a good place to be.

If their fortune does consists of these ill-gotten funds, I believe the phrase, "thief by conversion" or "thief by taking" would apply, as would felony charges. You can't take money out of a corporation, then file bankruptcy or shut the business down and expect all is going to be hunky dory. There are specific penal laws against that type of "confidence" behavior.

This is why you want to make sure that when your payment is charged, it shows the name of the cruise line and not the name of the travel agency. This ensures that your money and your cruise will be protected.

"Cruise Value Center Fails, Now What?
When Cruise Value Center and Cruises of Distinction, two sister travel agencies, ceased operations in mid-November, thousands of customers discovered that cruises they thought they'd booked were not, in fact, accounted for. That's because the companies charged passengers for their cruises by directing funds to themselves rather than, as is proper in agency accounting, directly to the cruise lines. Cruise passengers from virtually all major lines, from Carnival to Princess and from Oceania to Silversea, have been affected."

What Fannie Mae and Lehman Brothers did is a far cry from what is going on with CVC.

Also, compared to FM and LB, CVC is a ma/pa operation. The problem is that LB screwed investors (entities usually much smaller than LB). FM just mismanaged but people still have their homes if they made payments. In the case of CVC, they are jamming up Visa, Mastercard, Paypal, American Express, CCL, RCL, NCL -- corporations many, many times larger and more powerful than CVC.

If the family that owned/ran this travel agency is going around bragging about how well they ended up as a result of stealing customers' money or if they are living too large for bankrupt, unemployed folks, they are really too stupid to be crooks. It is also no wonder they are out of business. Loss lips sinks ships every time.

If it is found that so much as a dime of customers' money was diverted to personal enrichment of any officer or employee of CVC while leaving the customers and the above-mentioned corporations holding the bag, the entire family better hide that money well and pack an overnight bag -- because them be going to jail real soon. Ya hear!!!!

So many companies are going belly up burning everyone in the process, CVC is just the right size to be set up to be the proverbial "example". Shush, the CEO of Adelphi got 20 years in the Federal Pen. Does anyone even know or remember what kind of business Adelphi even was? They were just large enough to be made an "example" of.

maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but I haven't seen a better deal on a travel website than I was able to get directly through the cruiseline.

how much money can vacationstogo.com or other sites really save you?

I booked a solo for March 2010 on NCL Dawn, for a cost of and the quotes I got through a quote travel website didn't really give me a better deal.

Also, I'm leery of going through anyone else in case they go out of business so this time instead oif using a local TA, I booked directly through the NCL website.
