Need help talking sense to a friend about a cruise

A friend of mine is taking a cruise in May on Carnival and is convinced (at least by his travel agent) that if he waits a week or two before the cruise he can get a discount on a single cabin (oceanview cabin) for around $500. A single cabin (oceanview) for the cruise he's planning is normally around $1,700.

I told him no way he could get a cabin for that price at the very least the price would be doubled to $1000. Mind you this isn't his first cruise he's been on 4 or 5 day cruise but this will be his first 7 day.

Question, has anyone taken a 7 day cruise and paid only $500 for a single room?

The starting published rates are in the $500 range, but not for a solo traveler.

I am booked on the Spendor in May, in a cat 1A. It's $823 without taxes.

I don't think he will get it much cheaper as solo, however if he has a roommate, that will make a difference.

I wouldn't chance it. The fuel surcharges have been lifted for now, but if he waits, they may be reinstated, which will increase the price. You need to pursuade him to put down his deposit now.

He wants to go solo, which I told him NO WAY he can get a cabin at the price of $500, yet he insist it can be done. I mention to him if he keeps thinking that way . . . he will miss the boat. No pun intend.

Also he wants to go during the VTG singles cruise which I also told him it is a PRIVATE GROUP and he could only mingle with the singles during their non get together. Having just been on my first VTG it can be done, but I prefer being included in the VTG activities.

What can you do, my friend is a "hard head".

Rent the movie "Boat Trip" for him. Tell him that is the cruise he will get for $500!
