Default Brazilian visa

Due to a mixup with getting another visa, I'm really going to be cutting it close getting my visa for Brazil. Can anyone tell me their experience with turnaround time? I'm thinking I may have to fly to LA and walk it through the consulate. Has anyone had been through that before? Dang, why is the whole process so time-consuming?
