We will be on the Infinity Panama Canal-South America cruise January 18. The cruise ends at Valpariso, port city for Santiago, Chile. Celebrity has two full day excursions in Santiago but warns that passengers booked for flights out of Santiago before 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. should not sign up for the excursions. We have already booked our round trip air through Celebrity at very good prices but won't be informed of the flight arrangements until two weeks before the cruise. They could put us on a plane that leaves either earlier or later than 9 p.m. Question is whether we should go ahead and do a post-cruise extension for a day at a hotel in Santiago so that we can see the sights there. We don't want to just get off the ship and go to the airport to go home. Since we are in Santiago, we want to spend a little time there before going back home. If we do a post-cruise extension at a hotel through Celebrity they will adjust our return flight time accordingly. On the other hand, if our flight leaves Santiago at 9 p.m. or after we would prefer to tour the city and then leave on a night flight. Any advice?
I would do a search on times for the main airlines to leave Santiago for your home. If all the times are in the late evening you would know after the search. Santiago is a great city and much to see, but I don't know if I would take the extension - they are so $$$. Have you considered getting your own air- we saved over $500 each from the cruiseline's quote.
Actually we saved a lot on air $ going through the cruise line. Checking the rates with Orbitz and Expedia, our RT is about half the cost of one way from Santiago. A few days ago we tried for an air deviation so we could leave the next day, but that would have added $375 pp to our RT cost. So, in order to stay the extra day we have booked the extension.
There is a lot to see in Santiago. We booked a private tour. It was excellent. They greeted us early in the morning at the ship. Took us through Valparaiso, a couple of neighboring communities, as well as the wine country and Santiago. It was a twelve hour tour in an air conditioned van that ended at the airport at 9:00 P.M. for about $95. That was the total for four people.
We had a beautiful traditional Chilean lunch in the wine country. It was a wonderfully long day of touring.
