Default HAL Amsterdam South America/Antartica

I'd like to hear from anyone who took the HAL Amsterday cruise around the tip of South America with a cruise-by of Antartica. How as the trip? Do you recommend it?

Mary, I'll try again. If you go to www.cruisecritic.com and go to the HAL message board you will find a message thread started by Bill S entitled "Greetings from the Amsterdam - Holiday Explorer. I looked a short while and it had dropped down to the second page of messages. Bill S just completed the Valparaiso to Rio Amsterdam cruise. During the cruise on every second or third day he mailed a report to the message board of exactly how the cruise was going, i.e., weather, ports, tours, etc. He's also supposed to post a final summary later this week. It should answer a lot of the questions that you have.

I tried for an hour to find the "greetings from the Amsterdam" by Bill S that you suggested. I could not locate it. Do you have any suggestions as to how I could find it or did you save it to a file??
thanks you SO MUCH
JJ

JJ

Unfortunately, the Cruise Critic older messages were destoryed in a reorganization of the boards. I've been watchinb the CC boards for several months and have read numerous reviews and comments, including those of Bill S and others, and they all have been extremely enthusiastic about the Antarctic cruise. I booked the Amsterdam
for 12-15-04 from Rio to Valpo and am really looking forward to the experience.

We did the Cape Horn trip on the HAL Ryndam in 2001. This did not include the Antartic, but we had a great time, and I would recommend this cruise to anyone who wants to see wild scenery and a different view. I would also recommend doing some reading about the ports and history of the area before you go, as HAL falls down in the area of good port lectures (exclusively shopping information) and natural history or other lectures.

Although an older book (and very biased about the native people) we found Cape Horn: The Story of the Cape Horn Region by Felix Riesenberg and William Briesemeister very interesting for the history of the Horn, with lots of stories about the explorers and old sailing ships. There are several other titles available through Amazon. Reading Joshua Slocum's book "Sailing Alone Around the World" again which includes his account of rounding the Horn was also great.

We love geography and maps, so we ordered and purchased marine maps of the entire route and keep track of our location using our GPS too. The ships maps were not nearly detailed enough for us, and we wanted to know exactly where we were all the time.

This is not a trip for those who want to lay out in the sun all the time. Due to going from moderate to very cold weather and then to the tropics, you will need more clothing than most cruises too. We went in November (early spring) and it was in the 30s around the Horn and in the 90s (with 100% humidity) in Rio.
