Has anybody visited Machu Pichu or ports going North from Santiago?

My gentleman friend and I have been to many places including China but there is no place more captivating and impressive than Machu Pichu. In January 2001, we took the Holland America cruise around South America with a pre-cruise visit to Peru/Machu Pichu.

We had a few days in Lima before the trip and the day we were to go it was raining in Cuzco and the plane couldn't leave Lima. From Cuzco, there is only one train a day to Machu Pichu and it leaves at 6:00 AM, so our resourceful guide rented a helicopter to take us from Cuzco to Machu Pichu. It cost us an extra $100 each but we were later reimbursed with shipboard credit by Holland America.

I had a perscription for altitude sickness but was sure Iwouldn't have problems, but I highly recommend taking the medication. I was the only one in the group that had altitude sickness.

I highly recommend this trip -- for me, it was the trip of a lifetime.

My husband is from Peru. We went to Machu Pichu two years ago and it was fabulous. I really liked Cuzcu. Its such a great old city. We got very sick when we got there, as did most of the people getting off the plane. A few even threw up right on the floor of the airport. Its really bad. When you check into a hotel, they give you cocoa tea. It helps a little, but not much. I don't know if I would have been able to take the train up to Machu Pichu the same day we arrived in Cuzcu. For people who don't know, you can walk into any pharmacy and get any perscription you want in Peru. They have medicine there for the altitude sickness.

Anyway, the trip up to Machu Pichu on the train is very long. About 3 hours. It is a beautiful ride. The trip back takes longer, for some reason. They no longer have the helicopter ride going up there. We were planning on doing that. They've canceled them, due to the vibrations damaging the moutains.
