HAL Rotterdam - March 20 - April 5, 2007

Santiago to Rio

My husband and I will be taking this cruise and wonder if there are others out there that will also be on board.

We sailed HAL's Rotterdam from Santiago to Rio in February, 2006. HAL does the best job in South America. You'll love your trip. If you can, book the post-cruise stay in Rio. You will not be disappointed. Rio is fantastic and beautiful.

Thank you for the information. I am going to look into HAL's post cruise as we will be spending 1 night (2 days) in Rio and expected to book our own sightseeing tours & hotel.

Post Cruise In Rio de Janeiro
Great idea!! You'll be so glad that you did. Rio is a fascinating and beautiful city with so much to see and do. If you possibly can, try to book 3-nights for your post cruise. You won't be sorry. You'll fall in love with Rio. Also, you might want to pre-book for 1- or 2 nights in Santiago. It's not as interesting as Rio, but it's worth seeing and you will be rested for your cruise. The Rotterdam is in port for two full days in Buenos Aires. That is a real plus. Buenos Aires is also fascinating and a terrific city to explore. Here are our Top Three on our Santiago to Rio cruise:

(1) Being on Holland America's Rotterdam for 16 days (one of our very favorite ships).

(2) Spending two full days in Buenos Aires using the Rotterdam as our hotel (fantastic city, parts of it look like Paris).

(3) Exploring Rio de Janeiro for three days and nights after our cruise.

No other cruise line covers Cape Horn like Holland America. She is the only one that sails up to Rio de Janeiro and that is one of the best parts. Congratulations on selecting Holland America. Write back if you have any questions. I'm not sure if Holland America is still using the Sheraton for the post-cruise hotel in Rio. If they are, you'll love it there. You'll be on Sao Conrado Beach with great views of Ipanema and Copacabana.

Grey Line Tours is located on the 2nd floor of your hotel. You can book your own tours right there. If you prefer to book private tours instead of mini-van tours, I suggest:
Luciano with Rio VIP Tours.
Jose with Rio Turist.

Have a terrific time. Write if you have questions. Sights to see in Rio include:
Tijuca National Park
Sugar Loaf
Corcovado (Christ the Redeamer)
Chacara do Ceu

Great advice
This will be my second cruise on HAL Rotterdam. My first was last spring (2006) from Lisbon to Athens. I will be traveling alone this time. Being a retired pilot, I am curious about the Antarctica Flyover Excursion out of Punta Arenas. Does anyone have advice or is planning on taking it? I also plan to be in Valparaiso 2 days in advance and in Rio for several days after. What hotels are "sponsored" by HAL?

Grannyvee - see you there
Hi Grannyvee,

Vello and I are looking forward to meeting you. I don't know how we'll find each other. We live in British Columbia, CA. and love cruising.

Grannyvee - Antarctica?
Hello Grannyvee, We'll be certain to look you up. Are you, or is anyone, flying to Antarctica while in Punta Arenas? Vello and I would love to go but can't seem to get more info. Is there any chance of doing it on the spur of the moment?
